Paris/JTA — Ceremonies were held
in Paris to mark the 60th anniver-
sary of a roundup of Jews in France.
On July 16-17, 1942, French offi-
cials herded 13,152 Jews into the
Velodrome d'Hiver, a Paris cycling
stadium from which they were
deported to German death camps.
Serge Klarsfeld, president of the
Sons and Daughters of the Jews
Deported from France, which organ-
ized the ceremony, asked for a
moment of silence. "How many of us
will still be around for the 70th, the
75th" anniversary?" said Klarsfeld, a
leading Nazi hunter.
In all, about 75,000 Jews were
deported from Vichy France to Nazi
concentration camps during World
War II. Only 2,500 survived.

Ex-Israeli Air Force
Chief Peled Dies

Jerusalem/JTA — Benny Peled, who
commanded Israel's air force during
the 1973 Yom Kippur War, died July
13 at 74.
Born in 1928 in Tel Aviv, he was
one of Israel's first jet pilots. Peled,
who commanded the air force during
the 1976 hostage rescue at Entebbe,
is survived by three children and
eight grandchildren.

Ban On Slaughter
Lifted In Holland

Amsterdam/JTA — Jewish ritual
slaughter of bulls was allowed to
resume in the Netherlands.
Dutch officials had halted the prac-
tice, claiming it caused unnecessary
suffering, and drew up a proposal
that would have restricted the Jewish
community's freedom to choose
which types of cattle to slaughter.
The proposal was quashed, howev-
er, after Jewish leaders met last week
with the Dutch agriculture minister
and argued that the proposal was
more restrictive than those in any
other European Union country.
