Pearl Family Is Grateful New York/JTA — The family of slain Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl said they "were grateful for the tireless efforts by authorities in Pakistan and the United States" to seek justice for Pearl's murderers. After a Pakistani court convicted four Islamic terrorists in the kidnap- slaying, Pearl's family issued a state- ment saying, "Today's verdict is the first chapter in this process. We hope and trust that the search for the remaining abductors and murderers will continue, so that all accom- plices in this unthinkable crime will be brought to justice." In a videotape released earlier this year, Pearl affirmed his Jewish her- itage before being executed by his abductors. In the verdict, the British-born kidnap mastermind, Sheikh Omar, was sentenced to death. His three accomplices were given life sentences. They were also ordered to pay fines totaling Chicago/JTA — A Chicago couple launched a scholarship project for Israeli soldiers. Al and Pat Frank are underwriting four-year tuition scholarships for 200 Israeli men and women who have completed their service in Israel's army. The program, which will cost a total of $16,000 per student, is being conducted under the auspices of the Chicago chapter of the Friends of the Israeli Defense Forces. Chief Rabbi Of Turkey Dies New York/JTA — The chief rabbi of Turkey, David Asseo, died at 88 on July 14. A native of Istanbul, Rabbi Asseo was a longtime leader of the Turkish Jewish community, which now num- bers an estimated 20,000. Before he became chief rabbi, Rabbi Asseo was director of the Turkish rabbinical seminary in . Haskoy and the rabbi of the Haydarpasa congregation outside of Istanbul. He is survived by two daughters and two grandsons. Soldier, Palestinian Killed In Clash Jerusalem/JTA — An Israeli soldier and a Palestinian gunman were killed Tuesday in a clash near the West Bank settlement of Immanuel. Lt. Elad Grandir, 21, of Haifa was killed and two other soldiers wound- ed in the gun battle. The clash erupted as Israeli soldiers aided by military helicopters carried out an intensive manhunt for the terrorist cell that had carried out a deadly ambush a day earlier near the settle- ment.
