Debt Mounts Despite Mitzvot

The financial strain of the medical process on the
Abramovs has been somewhat eased by generous
Detroiters.
Sarah Shira and her father arrived in Detroit with
partial funds to pay the $11,900 hospital bill and
$6,000 physician bill for a single surgery.
When a second surgery was offered, the family
came up short.
In looking for funding, the Lowenthals contacted
their friend Mark Schlussel of Southfield. He made
an immediate phone call to the office of the chief
financial officer at Beaumont Hospital, explaining
Sarah Shira's family's situation. Within two hours, he
received a call back with news that all hospital costs
for the second surgery would be waived.
"They acted in the most expeditious, thoughtful
and sensitive manner," Schlussel says.
Even with the generous gift and a $3,000 dona-
tion from Dr. Keroub, Abramov still faces more
bills than he expected, including travel expenses,

repayment of $4,500 borrowed from family and
friends and a $7,000 bank loan taken out by an
Atlanta individual.
As Sarah Shira's father prepares to take her back
home to Israel next week, it is with hope that he
never had before for his daughter's sight.
It is apparent even those who have never met her
also care. "I felt extraordinarily good about being
able to do a mitzvah of this kind," Schlussel says.
"To think maybe this child can see because of some
little thing I did is extraordinarily rewarding." ❑
