Sunday Carnival
Supports CF
"It's my carnival," said Avery Monet
Engelman, 3 1 /2, of West Bloomfield.
And she's not far from the truth.
The second annual Cystic Fibrosis
Carnival will be held from 10 a.m-3
p.m. Sunday, July 28, at Orchard Lake
Middle School in West Bloomfield.
Events will be held inside if there's rain.
Last year, Avery's parents, Cherie and
Daniel Engelman, held the carnival to
make the commu-
nity aware of
Cystic Fibrosis and
the need for test-
ing. They also
raised $20,000 for
CF research.
Cystic fibrosis is a
genetic disease
affecting approxi-
mately 30,000 chil-
dren and adults in
the United States.
CF causes the body
to produce an
abnormally thick, sticky mucus that
obstructs the pancreas, preventing
enzymes from reaching the intestines to
help break down and digest food.
Specialized treatments are available to
address these problems at CF
Foundation-supported care centers
across the country.
Avery was diagnosed with CF when
she was born and needs to take an
enzyme to digest her food. In worst
cases, people with CF need breathing
machines and have a life-expectancy of
about 32 years.
At this year's carnival, kids can
choose from moonwalks, moon slides
and an obstacle course, in addition to
face painting, a petting farm and pony
rides. Food sponsors are Market Square
of West Bloomfield and Birmingham,
the Outback Steakhouse and Annabelle's
Catering:
The carnival is $15 in advance; $20 at
the door, and no charge for ages 2 and
younger. For information or to make a
donation, call (248) 577-1813.

Sharing Her
Knowledge
State Rep. Gilda Z. Jacobs, D-

week in the Federation of Bosnia and
Herzegovina teaching officeholders
and potential candidates there how to
run modern grassroots campaigns.

She's in the European nation as a
participant in a training conference
sponsored by the National Democratic
Institute for International Affairs.
"This is an incredible opportunity to
instruct people new to the democratic
process on how to articulate a clear
message and run a competitive cam-
paign," said Jacobs. "Here we take
things like voter contact, message
development and media relations for
granted, but in places like Bosnia-
Herzegovina, these concepts are as for-
eign to them as a dictatorship is to us."

"This is what democracy is all about
— a grassroots effort to involve ordinary
citizens in an extraordinary form of gov-

AZT Discoverer
Draws Plaudits
Dr. Jerome Horwitz, of West
Bloomfield, who discovered the AIDS
drug-compound AZT in the 1960s
while doing cancer research, was hon-
ored July 10 with the unveiling of a
bust in his image at the Barbara Ann
Karmanos Cancer Institute in Detroit.
"Dr. Horwitz is a humble, dignified
man who is steadfast in finding a cure
for cancer," said Dr. Mathew Borovoy,
who created the sculpture. "I admire
these qualities and wanted to honor him
with the permanence of a sculpture."
Dr. Horwitz discovered AZT, ddC
and d4T during his research against
solid cancer tumors at the Detroit
Institute of Cancer Research, now the
Karmanos Cancer Institute. Though
the compounds he invented proved
ineffective in battling solid tumors,
they were later shown to prolong the
lives of those with AIDS.
