SUSAN TAWIL Special to the Jewish News T he third-grade class at Yeshiva Beth Yehudah in Southfield marked the end of the school year with a "Super Siyum (completion) Celebration." The occasion on June 17 marked the students' completion of studying the .first book of Torah, Sefer Bereshit (Book of Genesis). Now the 32 boys from Rabbis Mordechai Weiss and Boruch Yehuda Bloch's classes will begin their study of Mishnah, the oral Torah law. The crowd of parents, grandparents and siblings at the siyum were wowed as the students gave them a sampling of what they've learned this year. The students marched onto the stage, singing a welcoming song and reciting the names of the parshat (Torah portions) from Genesis. Dressed in white shirts and black pants, the boys wore yellow and blue placards, each bearing the name of a different tractate of the Mishnah. After greetings from Rabbi Weiss and school principal Rabbi Avrohom Fishman, the official' concluding verses (siyum) were recited. Zev Goldner of Oak Park had the honor. Then, Yossi Tobi of Southfield recited the beginning verse of Sefer Shmot (Book of Exodus), as is traditional. The boys stood and recited from memory, in Hebrew with verse-by-verse English translation, the concluding sec- tion of Sefer Bereshit, known as the Birkat Yaakov. This is the extensive bless- ing the patriarch Jacob gives before his death to each of his sons, the heads of - the twelve tribes of Israel. Rabbi Bloch spoke of the importance of studying mishnayot.. Each student explained the subject matter of the par- ticular tractate of Mishnah whose name he bore. Marching off stage to the fami- lies' enthusiastic shouts of "Mazel Tov!", the boys sang: "Today, we are joining a masorah (tradition); a masorah of thou- sands of years..." 11] The Kresch family, Hachnosas Sefer Torah June 20, 2002 ... a great place to come home to Become a part of our community and its tradition.
