With Kofi Annan as secretary gen-
eral, and various committees and
commissions having Israel or the
Palestinians as an agenda item, the
United Nations expends great ener-
gy on the Middle East conflict —
mainly, to complain about Israeli
actions or„call for investigations of
them. Recently, though, Israelis
have grown even more skeptical of
the U.N.'s role in the region.

BEEMD THE ISSUE

Israeli leaders publicly called this
week for the U.N. to stop funding
the purchase of school texts con-
taining anti-Israel and anti-Jewish
messages. The books are used in
refugee camps the U.N. administers
in the West Bank and Gaza. This
follows earlier complaints that the
U.N. had ignored Israeli intelli-
gence reports of bomb factories and
active terrorist cells in those camps,
while embracing charges that later
were proved false that Israel had
massacred civilians in one of the
camps this past March.

House Democratic Caucus, apologizing
to the Jewish community for the "very
unfortunate remarks of Rep. Callahan."
Thomas personally called to apolo-
gize to Kellman, Mark Davidoff, exec-
utive director of the Jewish Federation
of Metropolitan Detroit; David Gad-
Harf, director of the Jewish
Community Council; and Susan R.
Herman, director of the Michigan
Jewish Conference in Lansing.
State Rep. Marc Shulman, R-West
Bloomfield, said: "Congressman Levin
has always conducted himself as a
statesman. Rep. Callahan's comments
were uncalled for and showed a lack of
respect for the diversity that makes our
country so great."
Mark Brewer, chairman of the
Michigan Democratic Party, said
such views "have no place in the
Democratic Party or as part of any
civilized discourse in a democratic
society."
