their big girls came up to lay a lick on
Alexa and Alexa just straight-armed the
girl and knocked her right off her feet,
knocked her right out of the game."
Berkley plays teams from other states
and Canada, and participates in regional
and national tournaments. This year,
Howell fielded Michigan's second girls
high school rugby team.
Berkley finished eighth in last year's
national tournament, and finished sev-
enth this year over Memorial Day week-
end in Seattle with a 1-1-1 record.
As a hockey player, Shencopp started
as a goalie but now plays forward and
defense. Not surprisingly, she describes
her style as "physical. I'm probably a bet-
ter skater and defenseman than a shoot-
er."
She takes pride in her physical play,

Temple Emanu-El, hasn't found a sport
she could play in the JCC Maccabi
,Games, although she has always wanted
to participate.

Jewish Teammates

She has several Jewish rugby teammates
at Berkley. Sophomore Sara Abrin "has
improved vastly from last year,"
McDonough says. "She's a good ball
handler who is starting to find her way
as a physical presence in the field."
Fellow sophomore Emma Lockwood
"has gotten better from last year, also,"
McDonough says. "We're going to need
her next year in the forwards, as a junior,
to contribute in the starting lineup if
we're going to be successful."
A third sophomore, Sasha Zoller, "is
one of those kids who you'd
love to have on every team,"
McDonough says. "She's
quite a character, someone
who is able to laugh at herself
and her teammates continual-
ly. She's always able to keep
things loose. She made some
tremendous plays in the
Midwest tournament. Her
intensity level just goes right
through the roof during
games."
Freshman Rachel Sherman
has been limited this year by
injuries, but McDonough
feels she's "going to be special.
She's a big, fast, powerful kid.
If she stays with it, I think
she'll have an opportunity to
play at the next level with
rugby — she's that good of an
athlete."
Another freshman player is
Sarah Bernstein.
As for Shencopp's future,
"She'll play college, if she
wants to," McDonough says.
"It might mean changing
positions to a forward posi-
tion, based on her size ... She's
so powerful and such a good
athlete, she understands
things and concepts so_quick-
ly that I think the door's open
for her if she continues to
work at it."
Still two years away from college,
Shencopp's possible career choices
include veterinary medicine or marine
biology — "Something to do with ani-
mals," she says.
She's less certain of her sports choice.
"I think it would be cool to play a sport
in college. I would be completely excited
to play either one of them [ice hockey or
rugby] in college."
