`What's Eating Harry Kirsbaum?' last
August that the column was going to
be lighthearted — just general topics
about popular culture," Harry said.
"And then when Sept. 11 happened
and all the trouble in the Middle East,
it got serious. I try to lighten things
up as much as I can, but sometimes,
it's inappropriate for me to write light-
hearted stuff when so many bad things
are happening."

Reporters Honored

Besides the first-place columnists,
Jewish News writers Diana Lieberman,
Shelli Liebman Dorfman and Sharon
Luckerman also were honored at the
journalists' dinner. The JN, with a cir-
culation of about 18,000, competed
against other local papers with under
50,000 circulation. The contest was
judged by SPJ members from
Connecticut.
• Copy Editor/Education Writer
Diana Lieberman won two awards.
Her Dec. 28, 2001 cover story, "On
Common Ground," about
Congregation Shaarey Zedek West
Bloomfield B'nai Israel Center's rela-
tionship with an inner city church
won second place for feature report-
ing. Past Jewish News cover stories can
be accessed on the Cover Story
Archive of the JN Online Web site.
Lieberman also won a third-place
award for investigative reporting for
"Preschool Beyond Reach," about the
high cost of early education. It
appeared in the Aug. 24, 2001 cover
story package on "Voices In Jewish
Education."
Winning a second-place prize for
investigative reporting was Staff Writer
Shelli Liebman Dorfman for her June
1, 2001 cover story, "Hidden Danger,"
about children with cystic fibrosis.
Dorfman received an honorable
mention in feature reporting as well
for "Stand By Me," her Feb. 23, 2001
cover story on a teenager's battle with
bone cancer and the support he
received from his friends.
Winning second place for spot news
reporting was Staff Writer Sharon
Luckerman for her coverage of post-
Sept. 11 unsubstantiated e-mail
rumors that employees of the Sheik
restaurant in Orchard Lake had cele-
brated the terrorist attacks; the owner
strongly denied the rumors. Her Sept.
21, 2001 article, "The Power Of E-
mail" preceded national coverage of
this controversy by months.
All in all, the Jewish News won six
awards, the most by any newspaper in
its circulation class and JN Online won
its first honor for a columnist. ❑
