"Great work
Gittleman"

wing with the dirt and disruption produced

L by a renovation or addition to your house

can be trying at best. At least that's what Doug
and Wendy Hamburger thought itor to hiring
Gittleman Construction to add two upstairs bedrooms
and baths as well as recreate the family room in their
Franklin home.

"We lived through this from April to September
and it couldn't have been easier," Wendy said. "They
kept right on schedule and Within budget, and the
quality was outstanding. To top it off, they were
incredibly neat."

So, if you're planning to remodel or add-on, but fear
the chaos, call Gittleman. With an emphasis on function, aesthetics and budget, the Gittleman team is
committed to producing total satisfaction and enduring value with the least amount of aggravation.

Just ask the Hamburgers.

Call today, and discover how easily Gittleman can convert your dream home into reality.

RENOVATIONS

eople eating lunch with
Harry Kirsbaum used to
wonder what was eating
him.
"I could always empty the lunch-
room," recalled Harry. "If there was
something that got me going in the
newspaper, I would start spouting
off about it until people started leav-
ing. It was a way of getting things
off my chest."
But the evening of June 26 was unlike
Harry's earlier mealtime experiences —
nobody walked out on him. At the
annual banquet of the Detroit
Metropolitan Chapter of the Society of
Professional Journalists (SPJ) held at
Glen Oaks Country Club in
Farmington Hills, Harry won the
acclaim of his fellow professionals with
a first place award as local New Media
columnist of the year for his weekly
Internet column, "What's Eating Harry
Kirsbaum?" It's posted every Thursday
on the Jewish News Web site, JN Online:

In his column, Harry reasons and
rants about the hot topics of the day
— and why we should or shouldn't be
concerned.
"Basically, it's the same theme,"
Harry said. "It's the way the media (lit-
ters from one lame story to another. At
the time they're covering it they're very
serious, and then the next time
[actress] Jennifer Lopez drops her fork
in a restaurant they go chase after that,
too. That's what's always been bother-
ing me."
Harry started his online column last
August. "My first column was about
Congressman Gary Condit being

interviewed by Connie Chung regard-
ing the Chandra Levy disappearance
and how I felt it wasn't that big of a
story. And weeks later, it dropped off
the front pages with Sept. 11.
At the same Detroit SPJ dinner,
Jewish News Editor Robert A. Sklar
was recognized as best columnist and
commentator for Detroit-area print
media under 50,000 circulation.
But Bob's views are more welcome at
dinnertime than Harry's — particularly
at the Friday-night Shabbat table. His
"Editor's Notebook" column on page 5
each week is the first item readers find
when they open their new Jewish News
each Friday and is intended to provide
material for Friday night conversation.
Bob's "Editor's Notebook" is a journal
of his exploits among the varied walks
of life of Detroit's richly diverse Jewish
community He places a special focus
on Detroit's emotional ties to Israel.
"The topics range from substantive
to lighter, from controversial to emo-
tional," he said. "But in the final
analysis, I do try to set a tone for a
Shabbat discussion. And hopefully,
our readers will walk away with deeper
appreciation of our religion and what
makes it so vibrant and unique."
How does Bob's impressionistic
weekly notebook compare with
Harry's online musings?
Said Bob: "Harry created, conceptu-
alized and introduced What's Eating
Harry Kirsbaum?' and he touches -a lot
of important topics — some with a
Jewish flavor, some just within the
general community.
'All, however, are written with
Harry's unique edge."
Chortled Harry, "I'm a lot meaner
than Bob.
"I thought when I first started
