limbing down a Los Angeles
skyscraper, diving for ship-
wrecks in the Bahamas and
being set on fire are all in a
day's work for Californian Rick Schwartz.
It's not to be assumed that Schwartz
has gone Hollywood and works in fea-
ture films. It's actually that he works on
a television series about feature films
and supplements the cinema by show-
ing behind-the-scenes secrets.
Schwartz, host of TBS Superstation's
Movies for Guys Who Like Movies, uses

includes Above the Law with Steven
Seagal on July 16, Universal Soldier:
The Return with Jean-Claude Van
Damme on July 23 and Platoon with
Tom Berenger on July 30.
There are many examples of the range
of acts Schwartz already has volunteered
to do in connection with the broadcast
schedule. For example, when he showed
Rumble in the Bronx, he was trained in
fight choreography and actually learned
some helpful defensive techniques. For
the baseball flick Mr. Destiny, he got
batting tips from Pete Rose.
"I learn things I can take with me
beyond the shoot," he says.

people who had a hand in making the
thrillers.
"What's best about doing this show is
that I get to live out some of my fan-
tasies," says the 30ish host, whose pro-
gram runs late Thursday evenings at
the conclusion of televised sporting
events on TBS. "It's cool to have the
director or the stunt coordinator show
how critical moves in a movie were per-
formed.

I've been hurt a couple of times.
Showing what's done makes the movie
a better viewing experience."

Action Figure

Schwartz, who initially defines a guy's
movie as one that sends a wife Sr a
girlfriend into the next room to read a
book, further insists it must have a lot
of action, a bit of gratuitous violence
and varying amounts of gratuitous
skin.
"The film also has to have a great plot,
characters that guys can relate to, real
action and something that keeps viewers
on the edge of their seats," he says.
Action — real and imposed — is
•not new to Schwartz, who studied
journalism at the University of
California at Los Angeles. He seems to
accept jobs that put him in the middle
of danger or at least excitement.
