You Can Fake It!

here is much done today with
virtual reality. But whatever

happened to REAL reality?

It seems that every part of
our existence can be reproduced to mimic
the real, offering us less cost or fewer calo-
ries or the ability to have something otherwise beyond us.
Though not as popular as it was several years ago, Fake
Fur is still making its plea to be worn. Usually, there is no
problem recognizing this "product" since the extreme colors
are a giveaway. (I do not believe that anyone has seen or
cares to see a shocking blue or radiant orange furry crea-
ture.) This dye-job is often vital so that the fortune that is
spent on these fakes will not be lost when the wearers are
attacked by the animal rightists. Question: How many dead
polyesters does it take to produce such apparel?
Fake Jewels — or as our family likes to call them "gen-
uine imitations" — are another adornment that cause me
to wonder. I know that some people fear the replacement
cost should an expensive piece of jewelry be lost or stolen
and so they, at great additional cost, have a paste replica
made while the original languishes in a bank vault. Why
not just have a fake made to your specifications at the out-
set and forget the real stuff? Also consider that the wearer
makes the reality. Consider this, if you see a "rock" on
someone who is well-to-do, you rarely question that the
item is real. Your reasoning: No matter how large or gaudy
the jewel, if the wearer is presumed to be wealthy, the item
must be real. Well, it ain't necessarily so.

Many vegetarians are pleased that there are a number of
Fake Foods available. Now they can have pepperoni (that
isn't) on their pizza, beef (that isn't) in their chili, chicken
(that. isn't) in their stir-fry. Even folks who keep kosher are
happy to see some of the fakes out there. My biggest shock
came when I attended a dinner club meeting (we all keep
kosher) that had Chinese as a theme. There on the kitchen
island were shrimp and crabmeat! I was informed about
what wonderful things could be done with pollack, but I
could not reconcile myself to it.
There are some dangers when it comes to Fake Resumes.
We read often of businesses that have discovered too late
that an executive's background is not as presented. People
are hoping desperately to get jobs and are taking liberties
with their credentials, hoping not to be discovered. Too
often, they are not; health and fortunes , become at-risk
things.
Fake Products can materialize as knock-offs, which end
_up being rip-offs. Manufacturers are suffering in some
instances because of unscrupulous vendors who imitate the
logo or design of a purse, watch or perfume. Many of us
are only interested in getting what appears to be the REAL
thing for a lot less money. If, howeyer, you are "taken" by .
one of these fakes, let me ask you-to consider what you
think a street vendor or a truck in an alley or a guy with his
arm loaded with watches is doing with the "real thing"?
By the way, I have a great deal on Suny Record CDs to
make to you. I'll let you know the secret meeting place for
my midnight madness sale. ❑

When I light my Shabbat candle on Friday night, spirituality,
emotions and peace overcome me. I feel the love of it. When I
stare at the flame, I become so engrossed with it. I pray for
peace, love and for the needy and sick. I feel how lucky I am
to be able to light one every Friday night and holidays. It
brings peace and love to the world. It takes away darkness and
replaces it with light, physically and spiritually. I started light-
ing as a custom at 3 years of age. And I never
missed it once!

"I made a promise to myself. I made
much more here for the Jewish peo-
ple." In Israel, I'd just be a simple
artist."

— Jacob Bunka, 76, a historian and
Jewish folk artist from Plunge,
Lithuania, who instead of immigrating
to Israel with his mother and sisters
after the war, created wooden sculptures
at 10 mass-murder sites, restored the

Jewish museum, as quoted by JTA.

"My dream would be that at some
point in the future, if somebody were
told that their child had Canavan dis-
ease, they would be told, 'Here are the
treatment options,' and not, 'There's
nothing you can do, don't get
attached to the baby.' One person is
too many to hear that."
