T

he Friends of Modern Art, a Detroit
Institute of Arts auxiliary, recently
gathered at the museum in the Rivera
Court for"an evening of fun and to say "So Long
for Now." "It's the last chance to see the gallery
before the renovation," said co-chair Linda Klein.
The evening began with cocktails followed by a
strolling supper and treasure hunt in the modern
and contemporary galleries. Patrons walked the
halls, compared notes and searched for clues within
the paintings. Proceeds from the evening benefited
the acquisition of Joseph Wesner's video
installation Voyageurs. The evening unveiled this
multi-faceted art piece consisting of a small video
inside of a wooden oar and leading the viewer into
a black room with videos on the wall and floor.
Rhythmic sounds of rowing in the water enveloped
the room and soothed the viewer. "The Friends
have a long history of bringing important objects to
our collection," said Mary Ann Wilkinson, curator of
modern and contemporary art.
