because our papers had to be in order
everywhere," she recalls. "But we didn't
leave Russia because of religious oppres-
sion. We were always free to attend a
synagogue and we observed all of the
Jewish holidays. Of course, we've always
had that same religious freedom here.
"Our relatives insisted we join them
. in America, and my father decided to
start a new life here."

Settling In Detroit

The family stayed briefly with relatives
in New York, before moving to
Detroit. Pittman attended Balch
Elementary School, Central High
School (then in the Old Main Building
on the Wayne University campus) and
finished her education at Commerce
High. Alortg the way, she attended spe-
cial English-language classes together
with other foreign-born people. The
family lived at Beaubien and Frederick
streets above a small grocery store that
her parents operated.
Then tragedy struck. Her father, 44,
drowned during an outing on Lake
Orion.
"Everyone in our family had to help
out and work in the store," Pittman
says, and eventually took over another
store at Dexter and Richton.
Eventually deciding that "the gro-
cery business wasn't for me," Pittman
became a saleswoman at the old Sam's
Cut Rate store.
She met and married Sidney
Pittman, a soldier during World War
II, at age 34 while he was stationed in
Columbus, Ohio. When he went off to
London, she returned to work at Sam's.
They divorced after 17 years of mar-
riage. Their son Mark, a Beverly Hills
resident, is an accountant in West
Bloomfield with two bachelor sons.

Pittman has lived in Prentis
Federation Apartments since it opened
23 years ago, serving on the residents'
association from time to time. She still
packs food once a week for the areas
Meals on Wheels program.
"At first, there were many Jewish
immigrants [at Prentis] and I had to
learn Yiddish more fluently to get
along with them," she says. "Then
came the influx of Russian Jews and I
had to brush up on my old Russian
language. They're happy to be living
with someone from Minsk,- and we all
get along real well."

Putting Pen To Paper

In recent years, Pittman realized she had a
writing talent and, encouraged by officials
in the building, continues to write essays
—in longhand — on her memories of
life in America, her Jewish upbringing,
being a Detroiter and even the city's
300th birthday celebration last year.
She has received several certificates
of excellence from the Wayne State
University Institute of Gerontology
Senior Personal Essay Writing
Opportunity program. Her essays also
have appeared in the Writer's Journal
of Creative Writing by Senior Adults,
part of the Jewish Community Center
of Metropolitan Detroit Writer's
Corner group.
"I'm proud of my writing ability and
the certificates I have received for
them ... it just shows what you can do
in America when you put your mind
to it and have the freedom to express
yourself," she says.
Blind in one eye from a degenerative
ailment, Pittman ends one essay by
thanking "the Lord for giving her fair-
ly good health and leaving at least a
few marbles in her head."
