F

rom both a professional and
personal perspective, it's no
accident that Daniel Silva's
last two action novels and the one he
currently is writing focus on Israel.
The Washington, D.C., resident
became acquainted with the Jewish
state as a Middle East correspondent
for United Press International in the
late 1980s and early '90s.
"I love every corner of the coun,
try, the people, Jerusalem," he says.
"Having lived in Arab countries, I
also feel comfortable in east
Jerusalem." When he has time, Silva
says, he would like to spend part of
every year in Israel.
The former journalist created
Israeli intelligence agent Gabriel
Allon for his 2000 best seller, The
Kill Artist. Allon also is the protago-
nist in The English Assassin (see
review on page 72) and in Silva's next
effort that deals with the Vatican.
"Israeli intelligence is so interesting
because the country has been in dan-

ger for such a long time," Silva says.
"[Israeli intelligence agencies] are not
risk-adverse. They have had stunning
successes and failures, and that
makes them fun to write about."
Allon is an Israeli agent/profes-
sional killer/art restorer. His boss,
fictional Israeli spymaster Ari
Shamron, is a composite of some of
the legends of Israeli intelligence,
including Israel Harel, Zvi Zamir
and Rafi Eitan, says Silva. "I have a
great deal of respect for them."
Silva's Jewish connection runs
much deeper than his affection and
admiration for Israel. Born in
Kalamazoo, Mich., in 1960, he was
raised as a Catholic. He began work-
ing for UPI in 1984 and while on
assignment in the Persian Gulf, he
met Jamie Gangel, of NBC News,
now a national corespondent for
that network's Today show.
The two were wed, and Silva says
he "has been living a culturally
Jewish life" since he married the
Jewish Gangel, particularly after the
birth of the couple's twins seven
years ago.

By Dorothy Samuels
(William Morrow: 227 pp.; $24)

Who wants to be mortified on nation-
al television?
Lots of folks, apparently, if reality TV
shows like Survivor, Fear Factor and
Bachelorettes in Alaska are any indication.
Marcy Lee Mallowitz, the„New York
bachelorette heroine of Dorothy
Samuels' Filthy Rich, has no intention
of being mortified when she accompa-
nies her dorky fiance, Neil, to the set
of the enormously popular Who Wants

To Be Filthy Rich?
However, mortified is a mild word for
what happens to the 34-year-old life
coach when Neil, who makes it to the
show's hot seat, unceremoniously dumps
her in front of millions of TV viewers.
Not to mention her Brooklyn Jewish
mother, who is mortally insulted when
Neil looks straight into the TV cam-
eras and lambastes her brisket.
How Marcy turns tragedy into tri-
umph, with the help of Filthy Rich host
Kingman Fenimore, makes for a fast-
paced romp through popular culture.

TV critics have had nothing but
praise for this first novel, even though
its author, a longtime editorial writer
for the New York Times, holds. their
medium up to ridicule.
Said Joel Siegel of Good Morning
America: "Filthy Rich is (a) funny; (b)
real funny; (c) very funny; (d) all of the
above. You don't have to poll the audi-
ence to know the final answer is (d)."
Cokie Roberts of ABC News called
the novel "laugh-out-loud funny."
"Dorothy Samuels deliciously
