Terror Report
Changed Speech
Comphi nenicuy iia120
Washington/JTA — President Bush
decided to call for Yasser Arafat's
removal after receiving an intelligence
report on Arafat's funding of terror,
according to the New York Times.
The report, which Bush got last week,
indicated that the Palestinian Authority
leader had authorized a $20,000 pay-
ment to the Al-Aksa Brigade, a group
that has claimed responsibility for
numerous terror attacks against Israel.
Bush had not planned to make the sur-
prise call for a new Palestinian leader-
ship before receiving the intelligence
report, the newspaper said, citing senior
administration officials.

Syrian Textbooks
Spread Hatred
Damascus/JTA — A new report on
Syrian textbooks shows how children
are being taught to hate Jews and
destroy Israel.
B'nai Kith International unveiled
"Jihad, Jews, Anti-Semitism in Syrian
School Texts," which examined 68
textbooks from Syrian schools.
Through lessons in all grades, students
are taught to hate Zionism and Jews,
seek to destroy Israel, view terrorist
activity as martyrdom and reject peace
with Israel, the report found. The
books also contain maps that show
"Palestine" in place of Israel and illus-
trations of Israeli soldiers killing Arabs.

Clinton Pardons
Probe Ends
New York/JTA — U.S. prosecutors
decided not to file charges against
President Clinton for his decision to
grant clemency to four chasidic men just
before leaving office. The prosecutors
gave no reason for the June 20 decision.
The case involved four men convicted
of bilking the government out of tens of
millions of dollars. All four lived in New
Square, a chasidic town in New York
that voted overwhelmingly for Hillary
Clinton when she ran successfully for a
U.S. senate seat two years ago.
President Clinton later shortened
their sentences just before he left
office. The prosecutors opened a probe
amid suspicions that the clemency was
a political payback arranged by Hillary
Clinton. She has said she played no
part in her husband's decision.
