Depression in 1932, Ralph
Stone, at age 18, started a small
Detroit business that would
blossom into one of the three largest
manufacturers of cleaning and wax
products for the auto wash industry.
Mr. Stone, the second oldest of nine
siblings, had wanted to study law after
graduation from Detroit Northern
High School — but he went into
business instead to help his father,
Ben, support the family. His mother,
Anna, had died four years earlier, one
month after childbirth.
By the time the young entrepreneur
retired as chairman of Stone Soap Co.
Inc. 60 years later, Mr. Stone's stead-
fast character had left an indelible
mark on his own three sons.
"His inspiration and guidance influ-
ences every decision that we make,"
said company President Kenneth
Stone of Bloomfield Hills. "All impor-
tant company decisions are influenced
by what Dad would do."
Steven Stone of Bloomfield Hills,
the executive vice president, said, "My

changed his line of work.

chemicals that also supplies nursing
homes, municipalities and health
clubs, was founded on Ferry Street,
near the Eastern Market, before mov-
ing to the riverfront Warehouse
District and, in 1998, to Sylvan Lake.
"Dad insisted that business would
come if we offered a good product, a
good price and good service," Steven
said. "He could never have lived with

them. He kept that quiet."
