This past January in Sarasota, just a
month following the funeral of his
wife Mary, George Stutz died at age
100. Lifelong Detroiters, the Stutzes
retired to Florida a few years ago,
but left a legacy to the Jewish com-
munity here. Today, the Stutz family
name lives on through a $90,000
charitable gift fund.
The couple established their chari-
table gift annuity in 1995 in con-
sultation with the Jewish Federation
of Metropolitan Detroit's endow-
ment staff. Today, the balance of
that gift supports Jewish community
agencies and programs, as directed
through Federation's Perpetual
Annual Campaign Endowment
Funds as well as the United Jewish
Foundation, Federation's finance
arm.
Local recipients of the gift include
Jewish Family Service, Hebrew Free
Loan Association, Agency for Jewish
Education and Temple Israel.
The former Huntington Woods
residents were long-time - communal
activists.
Attorney George Stutz was assis-
tant prosecutor for Wayne County.
He served as president of Jewish
Family and Children's Service, presi-
dent of Hebrew Free Loan
Association, president of the Shapero
School of Nursing at Sinai Hospital
of Detroit and president of Temple
Israel, where he was a founding
member. In 1975, he earned
Federation's highest honor, the Fred
Butzel Memorial Award, for out-
standing leadership and service to
the community.
Mary Stutz was active in the
Women's Division of Federation, as
well as being a life member of
Hadassah and a member of the
National Council of Jewish Women.
A charitable gift annuity is a "win-
win alternative to other invest-
ments," said Jonathan Lowe, director
of Federation's Endowment Fund.
The annuity allows a donor to re-
invest appreciated assets to gain a
lifetime guaranteed stream of
income, while getting an immediate
tax charitable deduction and estate
tax savings.
A donor may designate his charita-
ble gift annuity for the benefit of an
organization, school or congregation
of his choice. For information, call
Lowe, (248) 203-1461.
