the Islamic Bank, there are those who
don't like Israel, and may even con-
tribute to terrorist groups. But I don't
know if Osama bin Laden owned
shares in McDonald's. We really have
to do our homework. We need to be
diligent and be fair. We need to ask
`who will be harmed?' Will it be
Caribou and its employees or will it
have any impact on First Islamic?"

Local Coffee Lovers React

Locally, the e-mail is spreading, but is
not making phones ring at Jewish organ-
izations. Professionals at the local offices
of the Jewish Community Council of _-
Metropolitan Detroit, Anti-Defamation
League and American Jewish
Committee have not been getting calls
and have not commented on the contro-
versy. All the groups have histories of not
supporting boycotts because of the harm
they have historically done to Jews and
Israel, and because of questions about
their effectiveness.
At the same time, no one opposes
informed consumers making individual
choices based on their values.
Shari Stein of Oak Park has put her
love of Israel before her love for
Caribou•Coffee, and is waiting for
more definitive information before she
returns to Caribou.
"When we got the e-mail, we were
shocked and upset. I did my own
research and we've taken our business
someplace else until they prove to us
they are not doing anything bad."
But, once convinced, she'll go back to
her favorite location at Orchard Lake
and Lone Pine roads in West
Bloomfield. "I love Caribou. The people
are great there."
Kimberly Lifton of Huntington
Woods was disturbed about getting
the e-mail and what was in it. She
wishes people would get their facts
straight before they forward e-mails.
"Charges like this are not a game," she
said. "I get offended when people send
me e-mails like this when the person
sending it doesn't have all the facts. This
is not a good use of our time."
