limited. Several counties also have a
discount program ranging from 10 to
15 percent for the elderly and for
those with limited incomes. The
requirements are that you be a resi-
dent of the county and 60 years of age
or older.
"However, these programs don't
cover every medication and are viewed
as an adjunct to EPIC. An increasing
number of clients save money by pur-
chasing their prescriptions in
Canada."
Another way to save money is to
choose the generic equivalent of a
brand-name medication. In most situ-
ations, the only difference is a lower
price, according to the Mayo Clinic
Health Letter.
"Generic drugs deliver the same
amount of active ingredients in the
same amount of time as the original
brand-name drugs," says Dr. David
Rosenberg, a family physician in West
Bloomfield. "Even though generic
drugs are the bioequivalent to their
brand-name counterparts, it's still a
good idea to check with your doctor
before switching. Certain drugs need
to be maintained within narrow levels
in your blood to avoid side effects. "
The best bet for getting prescription
drugs at the lowest cost right now
seems to be the Canadian prescription
connection. Although many Canadian
pharmacists-offer to fill prescriptions
for U.S. customers, Barry Sternberg in
Detroit and Michael Blacher in
Canada formed a business, dispensing
commonly used drugs for chronic
conditions such as diabetes and
hypertension at prices up to 80 per-
cent less than those typically charged
at U.S. stores.
"I've been in the pharmacy business
in Detroit since 1975 and I've seen it
become increasingly difficult for many
elderly to pay for their prescriptions,
says Sternberg, co-owner with Balcher
of Can-Am Rx.
"Canada's prescription drugs are
cheaper because of government con-
trols," says Sternberg. "We get the pre-
scription endorsed by a Canadian doc
tor with our network of doctors who
receive a fee for their services.
Customers fill out a health question-
naire and everything is done by fax."
Customers pay $30 for the first
transaction regardless of refills, and
$15 for shipping and handling of each
order regardless of the number of pre-
scriptions in the order. Can-Am Rx
recommends that customers order a
three-month supply and have at least
a three-week supply remaining when
they reorder.
