arents looking for wholesome chil-
dren's entertainment will get more
than two kinds of chances to see
one award-winning act: Two of a Kind.
David and Jenny Heider-Klevans,
based in Philadelphia, bring their inter-
active shows and a new CD to five
Michigan venues.
The married couple, who also perform
adult folk concerts, will lead reading pro-
grams in Detroit libraries with "Treasure
the Library," June 25 at the Chase
Branch and June 28 at the Main Branch.
Another book program, "Join the
Winners Circle — Read," will be offered
June 26 at the Baldwin Public Library in
Birmingham.
Concerts are planned June 29 at the
Detroit Zoo and June 30 at The Ark in
Ann Arbor.
"We're celebrating our fifth CD,
Patchwork Planet, says guitarist David
Heitler-Klevans, who grew up in Ann
Arbor and whose parents, James and
Esther Heitler, still live there.
"We sing about diversity represented
in the patches of a quilt and the com-
mon threads that tie all of us together.
Everything we do involves the audience
with singing, moving and using sign lan-
guage.
"Red, White and Blue," one song they
wrote for the new recording, celebrates
the multi-ethnic fabric of the United
States. "Animal Dads" is another of their
songs and one of many related to the zoo
habitat. "Room to Spread Her Wings,"
about the endangered Bali mynah bird
and on their CD Connections, was com-
missioned by the Detroit Zoo.

The duo has been singing together
since 1987, starting with adult music
and moving on to children's subjects.
They met when they were attending
Oberlin College, where he earned a
degree in composition before becom-
ing a music specialist in schools.
Although she has a master's degree
in public health, she has taught dance
at camps and sung in a women's choir.
When the couple visit Michigan,
they bring their 7-year-old twin sons,
Ari and Jason, who attend services at a
folk shul near their home.
"We perform at a lot of Jewish ven-
ues," says Jenny Heitler-Klevans,
whose mother, Deborah Rosen
Heitler, lived in the area, and whose
mother-in-law made the patchwork
quilt they use as a backdrop for the
show. "We reference Jewish culture
along with other cultures."
