Ted Turner
Makes Apology

AIPAC Sees No
`Terror State' Now

New York/JTA — Ted Turner apolo-
gized for saying that both Israel and
the Palestinians are engaged in ter-
rorism.
"I want to make it absolutely clear
that my view was and is that there is
a fundamental distinction between
the acts of the Israeli government
and the Palestinians," the founder of
CNN and the vice chairman of AOL
Time Warner said.
"I believe the Israeli government
has used excessive force to defend
itself, but that is not the same as
intentionally targeting and killing
civilians with suicide bombers."
In comments published in a
London newspaper, Turner was
quoted as saying that "both sides are
involved in terrorism." For its part,
CNN issued- a statement saying that
Turner has no editorial oversight of
the network.

Washington/JTA A leading pro-
Israel group urged President Bush
not to.rush to call for the creation of
a Palestinian state.
The American Israel Public Affairs
Committee was reacting to news
reports that Bush will unveil plans
this week for a Palestinian state.
The group urged the president to
reject the advice of those "pressing
him to endorse a 'timeline' or an
`interim state' that would lead to the
creation of a Palestinian state before
the Palestinian leadership rejects ter-
rorism."
AIPAC spokeswoman Rebecca .
Needler said the pro-Israel lobby is
not opposed to a Palestinian state, 3,
but believes one created now under
Yasser Arafat would become a "state
sponsor of terror."

Zionists Declare:
`Face Our Enemies'

Jerusalem/JTA — The 34th Zionist
Congress opened in Jerusalem.
The congress is being held'under
the banner of Jewish solidarity with
Israel. In opening remarks to the
congress, Israeli President Moshe
Katsav criticized Muslim leaders for
not condemning Palestinian terror
attacks.
"Not a single Muslim religious
leader has arisen and declared in a
clear and firm voice that the acts of
suicide terrorists stand in contradic-
tion to the Koran and Islam," he
said.
- "Our strength to face our enemies
is based on our recognition that we
are fighting for values worthy of
being defended."

Pope Condemns
Bomb Planners

Rome/JTA — Pope John Paul criti-
cized a recent suicide attack in
Jerusalem, condemning those who
plan "such barbarous attacks."
"For the umpteenth time, I repeat
that those who plot and plan such
barbarous attacks will have to answer
before God," the pope said.

Jewish Charities
Get Wired On Web

New York/JTA — Some Jewish char-
ities are finding a virtual mother
lode as they turn to the Internet to
raise money.
According to a survey of online
giving by the Chronicle of
Philanthropy, the Jewish
Federation/Jewish United Fund of
Chicago and the Jewish National
Fund were the biggest Web success
stories of 2001.
The Chicago federation raised
$501,223 online last year, up 139
percent from the previous year, while
the JNF raised $375,000, up 65 per-
cent from a year earlier. The two
groups say their online donations are
still a digital drop in the bucket
compared to what they raise the old-
fashioned way.

Bronfman Prize
Honors 'Vision'

New York/JTA — A prize was estab-
lished in the name of philanthropist
Charles Bronfman to celebrate vision
and accomplishments in the Jewish
world.

who inspire the emerging generation
of Jewish people. Bronfman's children
established the prize.
