Israel Opts To
Seize Territory

Jerusalem/JTA — Israel announced it
would seize Palestinian-ruled territo-
ry in response to terror attacks.
The announcement came after
Prime Minister Ariel Sharon consult-
ed with government coalition parties
and top security officials following a
Jerusalem bus bombing that killed at
least 19 Israelis and wounded more
than 50. According to a statement
from the Prime Minister's Office,
Israel will hold the seized areas as
long as terror attacks continue, and
will take more land if there are more
attacks.
The United States did not criticize
Israel's decision. President Bush
"believes that Israel is in the middle
of recovering from a very serious
attack and that Israel has a right to
defend itself," White House
spokesman Ari Fleischer said.
The Palestinian Authority con-
demned Israel's new policy, calling it
an invitation for more violence.

Israel Police Nab
Illegal Palestinians

Jerusalem/JTA — Israeli police
arrested more than 1,400 Palestinians
said to be living in Israel illegally.
They were detained as part of a
national roundup following a deadly
suicide attack aboard a Jerusalem bus.
Most of the Palestinians were sent
back to the West Bank or Gaza Strip,
but some were detained for question-
ing, the Israeli daily Yediot Achronot
reported. Several Israelis suspected of
illegally employing or providing
lodging for the Palestinians also were
arrested.

Rabbi Calls Off
Armed Patrols

New York/JTA — A militant rabbi
decided not to launch armed patrols
in Jewish sections of Brooklyn.
"The response was so overwhelm-
ingly negative, but God forbid any-
thing should happen, and then I'll
have to say, `I told you so,' " Rabbi
Yakove Lloyd said.
In an interview with JTA, however,
Lloyd vowed to put the patrols on-
the streets despite police threats that
they would be arrested.
