Spotlight Revvin' At The Corner Newest bar in Birmingham hosts a charity preview party. CARLA JEAN SCHWARTZ Local Columnist T he Corner Bar, at Merrill and Pierce in downtown Birmingham, debuted last month with a kickoff party for the Children's Charity Coalition's summer event "Revvin' With Ford." "Revvin' With Ford" will be held 6 p.m. Friday, August 16, at the begin- ning of Dream Cruise Weekend. The charity event takes place at several Birmingham venues including the Community House and the Townsend Hotel. Rock-and-roll leg- end Chubby Checker will be this year's special guest. Money raised for the Children's Charity Coalition will assist these four local organizations: Child Abuse and Neglect Council of Oakland County; the Community House Children's Programs; Orchards Children's Services; and Variety — The Children's Charity. Shelley Roberts, president of the Children's Charities Coalition as well as president and CEO of the Community House, said collabora- tion is the way to go with "Revvin' with Ford." As she spoke to potential patrons at the Corner Bar kickoff event, Roberts mentioned the sluggish economy and the difficulty of the times, but still added, "We are counting on you." It Takes A Village The Village, a non-profit preschool for children with special needs ages 2-5, recently held a fashion show and auction. Marsha Mitnick, director, and Ira Glovinsky, child psychologist, helped with the event while Style, the Salon in West Bloomfield, organized models, music and chore- ography. Many Village moms and children helped make the event a success. Jonathan Holtzman, CEO, and Lawrence Shaevsky, property man- ager, took the first jump of the sea- son for charity. Village Green Companies, headquartered in Farmington Hills, operates many communities, including Village Park, Village Green and Regents Park. Promise Ball The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation's 2002 Promise Ball, held last month at the Townsend Hotel in Birmingham, raised more than $400,000. The Heart of Gold Award was presented to Estelle and Philip Elkus. Janice Cherkasky, Linda Honet and John Ponzio were the event chairmen. The organization will hold two more fund-raisers this year. A golf outing will be held Tuesday, June 25, at Indianwood Country Club and a walk will be held Sunday, Sept. 15. For information, call (248) 355-1133.
