verything from a vintage metal fire truck (with ladder) and a
white halogen floor lamp, to a blue pinstripe couch, vied for
attention at the recent opening of the Home Resale Shop at
Lathrup Landing.
A hamishe buffet dinner — meat, turkey, mashed white and sweet
potatoes — a silent auction and an appraiser gave the benefit evening a
"Road Show" atmosphere as if put on by your Aunt Rose.
Hosted by the Jewish Home and Aging Services Auxiliary, it looked
less like the resale shop it is, than a mom and pop neighborhood empo-
rium in the days before the every-suburb-has-one furniture chains.
"Retro and shabby chic do well," said assistant manager Richard
Montgomery. "It goes as soon as we put it out."
"This is all good as it benefits the elderly community," said Margo
Parr, executive director of Jewish Home and Aging Services. "All pro-
ceeds — after expenses — will help to support services," said Parr, eat-
ing dinner at a stand-up table with other party-goers.
"It's our job to take care of the elderly," said area architect Joel
Smith, who was eating and chewing the fat among a small knot of men.
A few feet away, Julie Ritten, event co-chair, was having a ring
appraised. "My boyfriend just took it off and asked me to wear it," she
said. When she heard the appraisal of $1,000 for the gold and diamond
ring, she blushed. "I haven't even told my mother yet," she wailed.
Don't worry Julie, your secret is safe with us — until publication.
The word is out, too, on constantly fresh furnishings and niche home
goods. And by the way, the paintings, prints and drawings are worth a
look: Art has a pretty long shelf life.
Not too shabby.
