and expansive ways to work, other
than as congregational rabbis.
"My sense is that many women are
choosing alternative paths," Rabbi
Feldman says. "I think women may
define success differently. They may
not see being a senior rabbi at a large
congregation as success anymore."
Yet congregations seem more eager
than ever to hire women rabbis.
"In my graduating class, women had
the pick of the litter of pulpit posi-
tions," says Rabbi Berkun, ordained at
JTS and living in the Detroit area
since July 2001.
Having more choices allowed the
rabbi to follow her passion for adult
education. In the JTS program she
directs, she "engages Jewish adults in a
journey of learning and exploration."
"I didn't decide on my position
because of my gender," she says. "It's a
rabbi's dream to have the time to study
Torah and Jewish text, to keep up on
modern scholarship and Jewish studies."
With her program, adults have the
"opportunity to engage with a person-
al religious trainer, one on one, in
couples, in small groups, at home, in
synagogue or corporate settings. This
is the best way to combine these inter-
ests and continue my own learning
and inspire adults in Jewish learning."
Appreciating Differences
"A rabbi who happens to be a woman
brings her own skills, interests and
perspectives," says Rabbi Berkun. "A
rabbi's ability to nurture or counsel is
not based on gender." Contrary to
stereotypes, she says, "Women rabbis
are not necessarily all nurturers, coun-
selors and good listeners. At the same
time, all male rabbis do not bring
assertiveness, power and authority."
Congregations need to have differ-
ent expectations of their male and
female rabbis, she says. "Just like in
our broader society, men are taking as
much of a role as women in all areas
of life including families and careers."
Rabbi Amy Bolton says: "It's exciting
to be a rabbi in a time and place where
there are really new and expanding roles
for all rabbis and new interests and
opportunities in women's programs."
Once the focus of a startling
proclamation.about a pregnant rabbi,
little Tal Erschler was recently heard
to make a casual comment that elicit-
ed another equally casual remark.
When Tal announced, "My mom is a
rabbi," his mom, Rabbi Faudem
replied with a reference to colleague
Rabbi Bolton's daughter, and said,
"And so is Shuli's." Ill
