Proof The Very Best of The
Knack CD?
DF: I loved that movie, and I
always wanted to do that song.
Rhino gave us an excuse to do it.

JN: Outside rock 'n' roll, you're
the credited lyricist on the
songs "Soul Food To Go" and
"The Zoo Blues," which
appeared on the Manhattan
Transfer's 1987 Brasil album.
What led to your involvement
with that project?
DF: I was a very good friend
of [Transfer founder] Tim
Hauser's then-wife, and she
told me about this album they
were doing, putting English
lyrics to Portugese songs.
I don't speak any Portugese,
which is a very poetic language,
so I tried to imagine English
lyrics to the sounds of the
Portugese words. It was a bizarre
but interesting experiment.

JN: The Knack's image and
musical style draws an inter-
esting parallel to the fictional
rock group called The
Wonders in the 1996 Tom
Hanks-directed film That
Thing You Do. Is that why you
chose to record the title song
two years later on Rhino's

McCarthy era, it was a safe haven

JN: You've previously noted in inter-
views that your parents, June and
Bernie Fieger, attended the Unitarian
Church.
DF: My parents went to the
Unitarian Church because it was a
place where radical "lefties" could con-
gregate. A lot of people who went to
the Unitarian Church were Jewish,
and the only reason [my parents]
went there was because, back in the

JN: Does your brother Geoffrey con-
sider himself Jewish or Unitarian?
DF: Geoff denies that he's Jewish
(laughs). That's fine with me. I get a
kick out of Geoffrey. He's a funny guy.

JN: What was the extent of your
Jewish education?
DF: At 7, my parents said to me that
I could go to Hebrew school or I could
play baseball. I chose baseball, and in
some ways I regret that decisicfn.
I didn't have a bar mitzvah. But I'm
going to raise my kids Jewish. And if
anybody asks me what I am — I am
Jewish. ❑

JN: Growing up in Oak Park, how
would you describe your Jewish
upbringing?
DF: My mother is a convert [to
Judaism]; her background was German
and Norwegian. My dad was Russian
and English and was an atheist, a Jewish
Humanist. He didn't believe in religion,
but his culture and his heritage were
important to him. They went to
[Congregation] Shaarey Zedek — when
they went to services.
