hen the winners are
announced at Broadway's
56th annual Tony Award
ceremony on Sunday, June 2nd, don't
be surprised if the city of Detroit or
state of Michigan is mentioned during
an acceptance speech.
That's because many of the nominees
have Michigan roots.
"One can generalize that of all the
states in the union, Michigan seems to
be the most represented," says Michael
David, a Grosse Pointe native and pro-
ducer of Urinetown the Musical, which
received 10 nominations, including one
for best new musical.
"In our show alone, three producers
and four members of the cast are either
from Michigan or U-M grads."
Jemiifer Laura Thompson, a star of
Urinetown, is up for leading actress in a
musical and hails from Bloomfield Hills.
She credits the University of Michigan
for her success.
"I wouldn't be prepared had I not
gone to U-M," says Thompson, who
graduated from Birmingham Groves
High School. "My professors made sure
I had all the tools and skills."
Gavin Creel, the young male lead of
Thoroughly Modern Millie, which just
received a Drama Desk award for best
musical of the New York theater season
from New York theater journalists and
critics, is nominated for leading actor in
a musical. Its one of 11 Tony nomina-
tions for Millie.
He also is a University of Michigan
graduate. "We had four years of intense
dancing, acting and singing training,
and it one of the most premiere pro-
grams in the country," he says of the
university's musical theater program.
Creel isn't the only Millie nominee .
who's spent time in the Wolverine State.
Sutton Foster, nominated for leading
actress in a musical for her portrayal of
Millie, attended Troy High School,
while her older brother, Hunter Foster,
one of the stars of Urinetown, attended
U-M, where he earned a bachelor of fine
arts degree in 1992.
Other Michigan nominees ,include
Detroit's Natasha Katz, who is up for
