his interest in medicine. When he was a
youngster living in New York, his par-
ents sent him to the American Academy
of Dramatic Arts to help him develop
speaking skills.
While attending the school, Levinson
won a part in an Off-Broadway produc-
tion of Antigone, working with Morris
Carnovsky, an Academy Award-winner
in 1951. But because Levinson's mother
was so opposed to a stage career, she
pulled him out of the school and
encouraged his interest in medicine.
After graduating from the University
of Buffalo, Levinson decided to special-
ize in colon and rectal surgery. He had
an interest in abdominal surgery, and he
thought this field would allow more
time with his family, which includes
wife Laurel and three children, and
some time to write.
"After I finished five years as a resident
in surgery in New York, I went to
Henry Ford in 1983," Levinson says.
"The hospital was considered one of the
best in the country in colon and rectal
surgery, and I was the first person in my
field selected from outside the hospital's
own residents.
"I worked with Dr. Thomas Fox, and
we became friends. I lived in a dormito-
ry on campus and had a great year in
Detroit. I still have some patients from
the city."

Just for Spring!
3 NEW Salads
to stir uy your senses!
Levinson manages to allow two weeks
of intense writing every summer as his
wife vacations with the children.
Revisions come later and in spurts.
A Ritual of Faith, Levinson's first play
to have a full professional staging, was
presented last spring in a workshop pro-
duction at the City Theatre of
Pittsburgh, after earning first place in a
New York play development competi-
tion.
Levinson's first major writing project,
The Empty Chair, had a reading in New
York City in 1994. His second play,
Francis Gallagher, was based on an
emergency-room encounter with a doc-
tor who had been jailed for performing
an illegal abortion, and it was featured
in a reading at Carnegie Mellon
University in 1998.
"I've always had a dream to get back
to the theater in New York City,"
Levinson says. "If A Ritual of Faith does
well in Chicago, we'll take it to New
York." E
A Ritual of Faith runs through
