of the posts'
ladies auxil-
iaries, attend-
ed the service on a cool and sunny
morning. Before the service began,
they visited the graves of comrades
and relatives and distributed small
American flags in the special veterans'
section of the cemetery.
Joining them were groups of
Canadian and Russian Jewish war vet-
erans. The latter wore from 15 to 20
medals, representing the various battles
they fought in and the fact that they
were among the half-million partisans
who maintained a resistance movement
against the Nazis throughout the war.
Spokesman Lev Kuperstein of
Southfield pointed out that the average
age for the Russian vets is 80, since 20
of their members have died since last
year. Commander Izzy Sigel of
Windsor spoke on behalf of the Balfour
branch of the Royal Canadian Legion.
The number of American vets of
World War II and the Korean War
also is dwindling around the nation —
they are dying at the rate of about
1,000 a day.
"We're going to have to merge some
of our posts together to maintain a
strong membership and carry on the
work of Jewish War Veterans," said Sol
Leider of Farmington Hills. "This is
especially important in view of all of
the anti-Semitism taking place in the
),
world today.
State JWV Commander Robert
Feldman of Southfield chaired the
service. Ladies Auxiliary President
Elaine Zeron of Southfield laid a .
wreath. Two buglers from Ferndale
High School played "Taps." A second
service followed at Hebrew Memorial
Park Cemetery in Mount Clemens.
Rabbi Herbert Yoskowitz of Adat
Shalom Synagogue officiated at the
Ferndale service, saying the events of
Sept. 11 raised the consciousness of all
Americans, especially Jewish veterans,
to keep democracy alive. "The sacri-
fices of the victims of 9-11 need to be
sanctified," he said. "People gave their
lives to an enemy determined to
destroy our country, and we must ded-
icate ourselves to American ideals .. .
we must save democracy and triumph
over tyranny." ❑
