Adam Shapiro and Huwaida Arraf

send to settlements or solidarity
groups, you are encouraging the
oppression," he said.
On several occasions, Shapiro
referred to "the Jewish community,"
never specifically including himself
and never bringing up his own reli-
gion. Yet at his church wedding, he
followed the Jewish tradition of break-
ing a glass.
"He is fired up from living in the
West Bank and seeing a lot of violence,"
Asa Shani said later. "Witnessing some-
thing first hand creates very strong emo-
tions. I think if Adam spent time with
the loved ones of someone who died of
a suicide bomb, he would feel very
strongly for them, too."
He sees Shapiro's goals as admirable,
but said, "I have different tactics:
Persuasion is better than antagonism.
He doesn't have the patience and time
to hear both sides of the argument. He
wants shortcuts and it's not as simple
as he believes. ),
Shani said he tried to persuade
Shapiro to speak carefully to open the
minds of his listeners.
"When talking to a Jewish audience
who is living a Jewish narrative of
thousands of years of persecution and
the Holocaust, you can't in any way
communicate terms that will open old
scars, as this will antagonize."
Shani dominated the exchange
among the 30 guests. The Jewish par-
ticipants tended to be more outspoken
in their questions. Comments from
Arab guests were milder. Each group
tended to be supportive of the other.
By the end of the evening, the focus"
was on the future.
The next step for Shapiro and Arraf
is Freedom Summer, a new program
of the International Solidarity
Movement. Its plan is to encourage
civilians worldwide to "take non-vio-
lent direct action," Arraf said.
Planning to actively continue their
fight to end Israeli occupation, she
added: "We will work to end occupa-
tion unconditionally. If roadblocks are
placed in the West Bank or Gaza, we
will take them down. If they demolish
a home, we will rebuild it." ❑
