THE ISSUE

Major print and broadcast media in
the Detroit area covered a Lebanese
community celebration in Dearborn
last weekend commemorating the
two-year anniversary of Israel's with-
drawal from its "security zone" in
southern Lebanon. The coverage did
not mention issues troubling to
Israelis and some Lebanese alike.

While Israel has withdrawn its forces,
the Lebanese government has not
even attempted to fully control south-
ern Lebanon, leaving a power vacuum
filled by the terrorist Hezbollah organ-
ization. Some Lebanese Christians
and others who oppose Hezbollah are
powerless to speak out, lest they be
targeted by the guerillas. In addition,
the entire civilian population there
could be affected by Israeli reprisals if
Hezbollah tries to "heat up" the bor-
der with Katyusha rockets or other
attacks aimed at Israel.
