children for orthopedic, burn and
spinal cord conditions. The three clos-
est centers to Michigan are in
Chicago, Cincinnati and Erie, Pa.
"I don't join something just to join,"
says Weiner, who also is active in Temple
Israel, Yad Ezra kosher food bank and
programs to take seniors for cemetery vis-
its before the High Holidays. "If I can't be
an active member, I don't join at all."
Originally from Ohio, Weiner moved
to Michigan in 1962. After working as a
manufacturers representative and run-
ning a scrap metal operation, he opened
his own business and expressed his inter-
est in Masonry by joining the Oak Park
Craftsmen. As he became more active
with the organization's philanthropic
work, Weiner's chapter received awards
for outstanding service from JARC and
the ARC of Oakland County.
Weiner remembers how, while march-
ing in a Shriners parade, he was
approached by a woman in the crowd
who told him how much the organiza-
tion's medical center had done for her son.
"My love for children is what
intrigued me to become a Shrine
clown," says Weiner, whose wife,
Susan, teaches in Detroit and whose
blended family includes five children
and four grandchildren. "I had to be
an apprentice clown first, and I had to
learn how to apply my own makeup
and take care of my own dressing."
As Weiner was on his way to
becoming a full-fledged clown, he
practiced painting his face in the base-
ment of his home, where he maintains
a business office. That makeshift dress-
ing room made for a big surprise for •
his grandson, Aaron Wade, 8.
"Aaron used to sneak downstairs and
try to scare me," recalls Weiner, a for-
mer wrestling coach at Berkley High
School. "Before he knew I was becom-
ing a clown, he came down 'quietly one
day, and I turned my head, which was
covered with white face paint. He was
the one who was scared for a change." .
But that's OK with Aaron.
"My grandfather is cool and funny,
but he's cooler and funnier in cos-
tume," Aaron says. "He's taught me to
make balloon animals and do the
tricks he does in the circus." ❑
