Today he is a top- 40 DJ at WKPK-106.7-FM in Gaylord, Mich. "I work 7 p.m. to midnight, taking requests all night long and talking between every other song," he explains. "I do a lot prank phone calls, too. For Thanksgiving I called the Butterball hotline and told them my turkey was moving. I try and make it amusing." Although Seller loves his job, the Jewish popu- lation in Gaylord is very small, especially during fall, winter and spring. "Gaylord is about one hour east of Traverse City and I wouldn't be sur- prised if I were the only Jew," says Seller, who was raised Reform and attend- ed Temple Israel. "But it will change in the summer [when] the population of the area around Traverse City goes from about 32,000 to some 150,000. Luckily I work with a great bunch of people and my Judaism has never been a problem." The 25-year-old, son of Mark and Caroline Seller of West Bloomfield, has been working in radio since llth grade at Walled Lake Western High School, where he and a friend used the school's equipment and the city's cable station to broadcast for about two hours every day after school. At age 17, Seller became a DJ at var- ious clubs around the Motor City and did a few b'nai mitzvah. After attend- ing Hillel Day School for a few years before transferring to Oak Park schools and finally Walled Lake Western, he enrolled at Northwestern Michigan College in Traverse City. "But I left college and moved back to Detroit to DJ for Music Box Mobile Disc Jockey Co., where I worked at weddings and clubs," he says. Seeking formal training, Seller enrolled at the Specs Howard School of Broadcasting in Southfield. During the summer of 2000, he worked at 96.3-FM in Detroit as a promotions assistant, and then landed an intern- ship at 95.5-FM in Oak Park, "on the air with the night-time guy doing funny stunts," he says. "That was my first on-air experience at a regular radio station." Aaron Seller: The number of Jewish listeners "in the Gaylord area will increase in the summer [when] the population of the area around Traverse City goes from about 32,000 to some 150,000." Following graduation from broad- casting school in August 2001, Seller began applying for radio jobs all over the country. Within six weeks he got a call. from WKPK and packed his bags for Gaylord. An interest in the entertainment world seems to run in Seller's family. His brother, Jeffrey Seller, who lives in New York, is producer of the Broadway hit Rent, and later this fall will bring Puccini's La Boheme to the Broadway stage. "Jeffrey and I are very close," Aaron Seller says. "In fact, I proposed to my finance Michelle on the Rent stage in New York after a performance." Seller hopes that one day he can join his brother in Manhattan. "New York is the No. 1 market and I would love to wind up there," he says. [11 1302 W.
