Bar/Bat Mitzvah

Tamar Michelle Friedman was
called to the Torah as a bat mitzvah
on Sunday, May 12, at Congregation
Beth Ahm. She is the daughter of
Dr. Paul and Mrs. Olga Friedman
and the sister of Gabriel and Sam.
Tamar is the granddaughter of Vita
and Tony Kronik and Joseph and
Lillian Friedman and the great-
granddaughter of Mrs. Mirra
Vorobyev.
Tamar is an honor student at
Hillel Day School of Metropolitan
Detroit in Farmington Hills. She
enjoys tennis, hiking and reading.
Her mitzvah projects included bak-
ing for the shul's minyans and vol-
unteering at Yad Ezra in Berkley.
The book centerpieces from the bat
mitzvah celebration were donated to
the Orchards Children's Services in
Southfield.

Steven Richard Garfield-Turner will be
called to the Torah for his bar mitzvah
on Saturday, May 25, at Congregation
Shaarey Zedek Southfield. He is the son
of Inez Garfield and
Leon Turner and
brother of Adam,
Fallon and Lexie.
His proud grand-
mother is Henny
Garfield. He is also
the grandson of the
late Leo Garfield
and the late Shirley
and Irving Turner.
Steven is an honor student at Hillel
Day School of Metropolitan Detroit in
Farmington Hills. He enjoys sports,
including soccer, basketball, tennis,
swimming and skiing. He also loves to
dance and is an avid gardener, hiker and
bird watcher. Some of his mitzvah proj-
ects include volunteering at a JARC
home, with the Friendship Circle and at
Shaarey Zedek's Camp Betman.

Zachary Adam Gladstone son of Aleen
and Larry Gladstone, will celebrate his
bar mitzvah at Temple Israel during
Havdalah services
Saturday, May 25.
He is the brother of
Jeremy and Daniel
and the grandson of
Roslyn and Bernard
Tucker and Roen
Klein. His proud
great-grandmother
is Edtih Tucker.
Zachary attends
Abbot Middle School in West
Bloomfield and enjoys biking, collecting

hockey cards and cars. Among his mitz-
vah projects, he found it very meaning-
ful to entertain seniors at Menorah
House in Southfield and to volunteer at
Temple Israel's religious school.

Jaclyn Elyse Gornbein will become a
bat mitzvah on Friday, May 24, at
Temple Israel. Her parents are Sharon
and Norman Gornbein; her sister is
Jennifer. Her proud grandparents are Sy
Raskin, Roz
Gumenick and
Myra and Carl
ornbein. She is
also the grandchild
of the late Selma
Raskin.
Attending Walled
Lake's Walnut Creek
Middle School,
where she is an
honor student, Jaclyn enjoys riding a
scooter, listening to music, swimming,
snowboarding, bicycling, roller skating
and walking. Visiting a nursing home
was her most significant mitzvah project.

Rachel Ann Hutton, daughter of
Shelley and Dr. Lenny Hutton, will cele-
brate her bat mitzvah on Friday, May
24, at Temple Israel. Her sisters Michelle
and Sarah and
brother Morry will
share in the simchah
as will her grandpar-
ents, Rita and Dr.
Jack Portney. She is
also the grandchild
of the late Shirley
and Dr. Morris
Hutton.
An honor student
at West Hills Middle School in
Bloomfield Hills, Rachel is interested in
dancing, soccer, volleyball and spending
summers at Tamarack Camps. Her
favorite mitzvah project was volunteer-
ing at Temple Israel's Labor Day picnic.

Carly Nessa Kaplan will be called to the
Torah as a bat mitzvah on Saturday,
May 25, at Adat Shalom Synagogue,
along with her twin sister, Marissa.
Sharing in this simchah are her parents,
Helayne and Jeffrey
Kaplan, and
younger brother,
Jeremy. Carly is the
granddaughter of
loving grandparents
Lenore and Gilbert
Kaplan and Esther
and Aaron Kraft.
Carly is a seventh-
grade honor student at Berkshire Middle
School in Birmingham. Her extracurric-

ular activities include dance,. swimming,
tennis, volleyball, student council,
spending time with friends. She enjoys
spending her summers at Tamarack
Camps and at Camp Michigania. As
one of her mitzvah projects; Carly
makes fleece blankets which are given to
children entering crisis care and foster
homes.

Marissa Hali Kaplan will celebrate her
bat mitzvah on Saturday, May 25, at
Adat Shalom Synagogue, along with her
twin sister, Carly. Sharing in this special
occasion will be her parents, Helayne
and Jeffrey Kaplan, and brother, Jeremy.
Marissa is the grand-
daughter of honored
grandparents Lenore
and Gilbert Kaplan
and Esther and
Aaron Kraft.
Marissa is a sev-
enth-grade honor
student at Berkshire
Middle School in
Birmingham.
Softball, dancing, skiing, tennis, student
council, watersports and spending sum-
mers at Tamarack Camps and
Michigania are activities Marisssa enjoys.
As her main mitzvah project, Marissa
spent the past year assisting special stu-
dents with their academic studies ;

Samuel Andrew Miller will be called to
the Torah on Saturday, May 25, as he
becomes a bar mitzvah at Congregation
Ahavas Israel in Grand Rapids. He is the
son of Paula and Edward Miller, brother
of Lindsay and Danielle, grandson of
Alan and Anne
Miller of Skokie, Ill.,
and Millie Miller of
Grand Rapids.
Proud great-grand-
parents are Sidney
and Ethel Rieff of-
Chicago.
Sam attends East
Grand Rapids
Middle School and
participates in many school sports pro-
grams throughout the year. He has
attended Camp Ramah in Canada for
the last three summers. For his mitzvah
project, Sam volunteered at the YMCA
day care center for children with physi-
cal disabilities. He read, played with and
helped the children.

Daniel Grant Normandin, son of
Carolyn and Greg Normandin, will cele-
brate his bar mitzvah at Temple Israel on
Saturday, May 25. He is the brother of
Joshua and Rachel. Proud grandparents
are Lona and Ernie Grant and Rose and

Paul Normandin.
Excited great-grand-
mother is Elizabeth
Adams.
Danny plays clar-
inet in the band at
Abbott Middle
School in West
Bloomfield, where
he is an honor stu-
dent. His other interests include in-line
hockey, video games and baseball.
Entertaining seniors at the Fleischman
Residence in West Bloomfield was one
of his more memorable mitzvah proj-
ects.

Susan Victoria Schwartz will be
called to the Torah as a bat mitzvah
on Saturday, May 25, at
Congregation Shaarey Zedek
Southfield. She is the daughter of
Ronna Ross and
Steven Schwartz
and sister of
Jordan, Michael
and Jonathan.
Proud grandpar-
ents are Mae
Schwartz, Jeanne
Gustafson and
Norman and
Marsha Ross. She
is also the granddaughter of the late
Samuel Schwartz and the late Donald
Gustafson.
Susan is an honor student at Derby
Middle School in Birmingham. She
enjoys competition dance, lacrosse,
in-line skating and summers at Camp
Ramah in Canada. Her mitzvah proj-
ects included a holiday party for
adopted and foster children and serv-
ing rescue workers at the World Trade
Center in New York City.

Zachary Brent Simons will be called
to the Torah as a bar mitzvah on
Saturday, May 25, at Temple Shir
Shalom. He is the son of Candace
and Jeff Simons and brother of
Blake. He is the
grandson of Eve
and Iry Simons
and the late Faye
and Harry
Rosenbaum.
Zack is an honor
student at Walnut
Creek Middle
School in Walled
Lake. He enjoys
playing basketball, watching movies
and spending time with family and
friends. He found it very meaningful
to volunteer at Yad Ezra in Berkley
as part of his mitzvah project.
