to clear debris and clean the streets
and then paint
murals in the alleyways in the 22-block area around the
school. Students helped artists desigii the art; then volun-
teers, along with neighbors and community groups such as
City Year, made the dream a reality.
On April 27, after weeks of preparation, more than 270
volunteers arrived to paint murals that artists had drawn on
dozens of garage doors, said Carmen Garcia of City Year.
Penny Bailer, executive director of City Year Detroit,
added, "When you've finished a good day's work of giving
back, you really know you have accomplished something
that matters."
"It was an amazing experience," said volunteer Amy Israel
of Detroit, a member of Congregation Shir Tikvah. "We
had well-organized teams of artists, and the neighbors loved
it, too. Many came out and helped us paint and clean. And
the kids had a blast and were proud of what they painted."
Doubtful at first that this huge undertaking of painting
dozens of garages could happen, she adds, "It exceeded my
expectations. There are good things happening in Detroit."
Herberger, who is Orthodox, couldn't work at the
Saturday event because of Shabbat, but he was part of the
weeks of prep work. Besides clearing the graffiti, his group
removed "a lot of junk," he says, such as car bumpers and
concrete blocks.
"Art in the Alley's been a huge success," Herberger said.
"And we're building on it. Detroit's reinvigorating itself.
"We [Jews] have an obligation of tikkun olam (repairing
the world). It's for the whole world, not just Israel, but olam.
