From the Editor
o help kick off another marvelous Michigan summer, we asked
our readers to send us their favorite quintessential sun-drenched
images of the season. There were so many wonderful pho-
tographs of children that it was difficult to choose just one smil-
ing face for our cover. Luckily, art directors Charlie Krasner and Debbie
Schultz solved the problem by creating a summery snapshot collage.
Thank you, boys and girls, for the fabulous avalanche of photos!
So, what kind of summer will 1999 bring? After reading this issue, no
doubt your summer will be filled with activities from A to Z.
Birmingham-based freelance writer Linda Bachrack has scouted the city
from Detroit's Eastern Market to Cranbrook in Bloomfield Hills, inform-
ing us of the latest trends, fun-filled festivals and awesome activities. And
if you want to just sit back and relax, Bachrack has plenty of ideas,
including new novels, bathing suit styles and a few nibbling thoughts
(melons and veggie spreads rate high on her list of must-eats).
Golfers — and non-golfers — are sure to enjoy the story, In Your
Dreams. Writer Marj Jackson Levin of Birmingham asked area golfers to
put on their fantasy caps and share with us their greatest golf dream.
You'll smile and laugh when reading about these exotic fantasies that like-
ly will inspire your own game. One source even takes us on a quick tour
of the magnificent courses in Scotland — and his fantasy was real.
Other worldly delights come to us through the American Youth
Hostels. After talking to the director of the Berkley-based Michigan Youth
Hostel, we discovered that staying at a hostel is a surprisingly great way to
, travel. Many friends are made along the way, whether you're heading .to
Crystal Mountain in Michigan or paddling down a canal in Italy.
From picnic tips to the hottest new country club designer, our Summer
Pleasures guide hopefully will whet your appetite for a memorable season.
