Sunday Service
Honors War Vets

The Michigan Jewish War Veterans and
Ladies Auxiliary will host an internation-
al Memorial Day service joined by
Canadian and Russian war veterans at
Machpelah Cemetery, on Woodward,
north of Eight Mile, in Ferndale Sunday,
May 26. The ceremony is at 10 a.m.
A second service begins at 12:30 at
Hebrew Memorial Park Cemetery,
21503 E. 14 Mile, in Mount Clemens.
Rabbi Herbert Yoskowitz of Adat
Shalom Synagogue will officiate at
Machpelah and JWV Dept. Chaplain
Tom Tannis at Hebrew Memorial Park.
Past Dept. Commander Milton Klein
will chair the events, directed by State
Commander Robert Feldman and
Ladies Dept. President Elaine Zeron. At
Machpelah, taps will be sounded by the
Ferndale High band.
Izzy Sigel will head the Balfore Branch
of the Royal Canadian Legion; the
Russian delegation will be headed by
Arkagy Ongeyberg.
All services are open to the public;
friends and relatives of deceased veterans
are especially invited. In case of rain, the

Historical Society
Slates Meeting

The Jewish Historical Society of
Michigan will hold its annual meeting
10:45 a.m. Sunday, June 2, at Adat
Shalom Synagogue, preceding a noon
luncheon.
The Leonard N. Simons History
Award will be presented to Adele W.
Smiler, past president of JHSM and a
native Detroiter now of Southfield, who
has been instrumental in coordinating
and leading bus tours of historic Jewish
Detroit for nearly 20 years as well as
being active in other community activi-
ties. Mary Lou Zieve, one of Leonard
Simons' daughters, will present the
award.
The keynote speaker will be Charles
A. "Chuck" Forbes, a native Detroiter
who has been involved in developing the
master plan to preserve and revitalize
Detroit's theater district. His presenta-
tion will include a video showing the
relocation of the Gem Theatre-Century
Club Building, a national designated
building.
There is a charge of $25 for the lunch.
