ti

AFTER 15 YEARS of SERVING SOUTHEASTERN MICHIGAN,

combat left him almost paralyzed,
requiring two surgeries. After visiting
the Beit Halochem Center every day
for 12 years, he now can walk on his
own.
Hershko is the last surviving disabled
veteran of the raid to rescue Israelis
being held hostage in Entebbe,
Uganda, 26 years ago. The action para-
lyzed him from the waist down.
"But with the help of our rehab
centers, he didn't let this ruin his life,"
Gottfried said. "He is now in the
computer business, using a device in
his mouth to punch the keys. He's an
excellent example of how a disabled
veteran returned to a productive life."
The 24-year-old Ganon is typical of
the many civilians getting injured in
the suicide bombings and becoming
amputees. Her life was shattered in
Hadera two years ago when a bomb
went off in a marketplace.
Gottfried said, 'After much physical
therapy and rehab at one of our cen-
ters, [Ganon] tells us she feels better
about her situation . . . she's not both-
ered by people staring at her and she
feels whole again."
Disabled Israeli veterans were guest
speakers at the recent local FIDV orga-
nizational meetings. Dr. Avraham Raz,
a captain in the paratroopers, who
served in the defense forces from 1963-
1994, lost an eye during combat in
Egypt in 1973. He now is a cancer
researcher at Wayne State University in
Detroit. Ron Stay was a paratrooper in
a special forces unit, twice wounded in
Lebanon.
FIDV is entirely separate from
Friends of the Israel Defense Forces
(FIDF), which has a metro Detroit-
based Chapter in Bloomfield
Township. That organization funds
"rest and recreation" for active sol-
diers.
The importance of FIDV,
Gottfried said, is to "support the
injured and disabled [in Israel] who
have sacrificed so much for all of us
and whose daily lives have been
altered irrevocably."
It is also the Jewish thing to do, as
she said: "The Torah commands us to
`open wide your hands to your broth-
er . . . to the needy in the land.'
