Israel Fighting
For Survival

I was shocked and dismayed at your

May 10 editorial ("A Useless
Meeting Now," page 29).
I cannot believe that you are sug-
gesting that the Arab states, the
European nations and the United
Nations work together to defend
Israel's security. If it were not for the
United States, those very countries
and the U.N. would push Israel back
to the 1967 borders and flood Israel
with a few million Arab refugees.
In my opinion, this would lead to,
God forbid, another Holocaust.
Before the 1967 war, the United
States had given a letter to Israel
promising that the U.S. Navy would
break the blockade in the straits of
Tiran if the Egyptians closed it from
Israeli shipping. When Israel asked
the U.S. to keep its promise, nobody
could find the letter. Israel had to go
to war on its own.
Israel can defend its own security.
My father, an Auschwitz survivor,
told me many times that Israel can-
not depend on anyone else to defend.
it. It has to do it by itself. Your
statement, "American enforcement
of its requirement that the arms it
has sold Israel be used only for
defensive purposes" — I know that
you could not have meant the same

thing as Israel's enemies, who are
constantly saying that Israel is mis-
using U.S. arms.
It is my firm conviction that none
of us has the right to criticize Israel's
foreign policy and defense decisions.
They are living and dying by their
decisions, and we are living here in
safety and comfort. Israel is fighting
for its survival. We must support
Israel so it will continue in gathering
Jews, who are in danger; from all
over the world.

I cannot begin to express how
accommodating your team of [edi-

Angie Baan were to work with. Each
of them took the time to speak with
our students about their careers and
experience in the field. They also
gave students pointers on how to
enter the industry. Most important-
ly, they made each student feel like a
"supermodel" for the day.
Since the story was published, we
have put copies of the article
throughout the school. The feedback
has been phenomenal. Students and
teachers who had never read the
Jewish News were asking me where
they could go and buy a copy.
Besides posting the magazine, I
also sent copies of the article to local
merchants. Those who participated
in the show were thrilled to get the
