The champ of the younger division was Dovi Snider, 9, of Oak Park, who won the speed-skating and stick-han- dling contests and tied for best goalie with Mayer Cohen, 9, of Oak Park. Ben Blavin, 11, of Oak Park was the most accurate shooter, and Ely Kresch, 9, of Southfield and Josh Blavin, 9, of Oak Park tied for first in the scoring contest. Helmets were not required, as they are in games, but many players wore them anyway. A humorous exception was Sruli Schon, 13, of Oak Park, whose kippah consistently flew off dur- ing every competition. Comic relief was also provided by skaters occasionally skidding uncontrollably into the goals, and by others juggling balls as they skat- ed. French ended All-Star Sunday with an appeal for additional volunteer coaches, as well as consolation for the losers. "This was our first time we've had this event, and we're going to make it even better the next time. If you didn't win, practice your skills, and come back," he said. The winners couldn't have been hap- pier. Avi Kohn did a little victory dance as he skated away with his accurate shooter gift.certificate. "I'm famous!" he shouted. O ...
