The Ubiquitous Bagel

Reichl, who has no real background in
Jewish cooking because there was no
religious training in her home, does
enjoy matzah brei and regularly prepares
it for her family and friends.
She loves what she calls "real bagels,"
not what she describes as "big, puffy,
bready, unboiled" products now popular.
"It's great that the bagel has become a
sort of ubiquitous American meal, I sup-
pose because it's transportable, easy to
serve, not particularly fattening and
takes all kinds of toppings," she says.
"When people go out to grab a bagel
and coffee and bring that to their desks,

they've found very 'neat food."
Reichl has been a regular traveler to
Israel to see her relatives and enjoys the
Mideastern cuisine, including hummus.
"The thing I do to relax is cook,"
Reichl says. "I tend to spend all weekend
