Torah in Parshat Yitro (Exodus 19:3-8),
when Moses first ascended Mount
Sinai (the second day of Sivan). There,
God commanded Moses to say to the
Israelites: "And now, if you hearken
well to me and observe my covenant,
you shall be to me the most beloved
treasure of all peoples ... You shall be
to me a kingdom of priests and a holy
nation."
Other than not reciting the daily
Tachanun penitential prayer, there are
no special ceremonies for Yom
tlalVleyuchas.

Q: I'm confused about all the differ-
ent ritual roles at a brit milah (ritual
circumcision). I know there is a kvat-
ter and a sandek. What's the differ-
ence between them?
A: Here's the procedure and the roles:
Mother and baby usually are in a
room different from where the brit is
to be held. The mother hands the
baby to another woman, known as the
kvatterin, who brings the baby to the
room of the brit. The kvatterin hands
the baby to the kvatter (in most cases,
the kvatter and kvatterin are married),
who brings the baby to either the
mohel or the father.
The mohel or the father then places
the baby on the lap of the sandek,
who holds the infant during the cir-
cumcision itself In most cases, the
sandek is the baby's grandfather. It's
traditional to assign the roles of kvat-
ter and kvatterin to a couple without
children yet or without a son (yet).

Q: With Ariel Sharon so much in the
news, I was wondering about his last
name. What does it mean, and does
it have any relation to the English
feminine name of the same spelling?
A: In Hebrew, sharon means "plain"
and "the Sharon" refers to the flat, fer-
tile coastal area of Israel that extends
from Mount Carmel to Jaffa.
The name occurs in the Tanach
(Jewish Bible) in several places, includ-
ing Song of Songs 2:1 ("I am a rose of
Sharon ..."), Isaiah 33:9 ("... the
Sharon is like a wilderness ..."), also
Isaiah 35:2 and 65:10, and I

Chronicles 27:29.
The girl's name of Sharon comes
directly from the Hebrew and was
introduced into English by the
Puritans (probably from the reference
in Song of Songs), who were fond of
biblical names. Likewise, the name of
Sharon, Pa., is derived from the same
sources.
