Walking The Walk

Forty-seven Detrorters
to head for Israel on
solidarity mission.

hey'll bring their cameras,
prayers for peace and packs
filled with gifts for Israeli chil-
dren, soldiers and hosts. And they'll
soak up as many experiences as possible
in Israel on their four-day whirlwind
itinerary that includes high-level brief-
ings and a trip to Detroit's Partnership
2000 region in the Central Galilee.
The 47 members of the Jewish
Federation of Metropolitan Detroit's
Israel Solidarity Mission are not on a
"sightseeing tour," explains Peter Alter,
mission chair and a
member of Federation's
executive committee.
"What excites us most
about this mission is that
it shows Federation's
commitment to walk the
walk and talk the talk."
Peter Alter
Once again, Detroit will
take a leadership role, rep-
resenting the largest delegation among
the 175 total participants in the United
Jewish Communities' national
IsraelNow solidarity mission May 19-24.
"We've got a great group of people
going," Alter said. "And we have excit-
ing events planned."
The purpose of each site visit or pro-
gram on the schedule_is to develop a
better understanding of the effects of
the war on everyday life and to see first-
hand how Federation dollars are being
allocated through the Jewish Agency for
Israel (JAFI) and the American Jewish
Joint Distribution Committee (JDC).
' Participants will come away with a real
sense of what's going on in Israel today.
Because Federation has planned a spe-
cific itinerary independent of the UJC,
some meetings have yet to be confirmed.
However, the group is hoping for a stop
at the American embassy in Tel Aviv on
Monday as well as a private meeting on
Thursday with Aharon Barak, chief jus-
rice of the Israeli Supreme Court.
Another highlight of the mission
will include a visit to Netanya. There,
the group will see a Federation-funded
program called PACT (Parents and
Children Together), a community ini-
dative designed to prepare Ethiopian-
Israeli children for first grade. Also in
Netanya, the group will participate in
a memorial service for victims of the
Passover massacre and lay a wreath at
the Park Hotel.
