Overcoming Differences
The American Arab and Jewish Friends
has lasted since 1981 largely because the
group makes it a point not to discuss
politics or the situation in the Middle
East, said Arnold Michlin-, a Friends
founder. But the critical issues in Israel
were not far from anyone's minds.
"We understand the issues that are
out there, but you work together and
see the opportunities for friendship
and peace," said
Abdul Khalil of
Dearborn. "This is
what America is all
about."
Said Brenda
Rosenberg of
Bloomfield Hills:
"We've created so
many wonderful
friendships with so
many people here,
created the ability to
step into another
person's shoes. That's
what we need to create everywhere."
This year's Community Service
Award winners, Judge George Steeh
III and attorney J. Leonard Hyman,
both brought the Middle East turmoil
into their acceptance speeches.
"The rhetoric has become ridicu-
lous," said Steeh, who is one of only
two judges in U. S. district courts of
Arabic descent. "People --
absurd reasoning to justify murderous
attacks on innocent civilians, both
Israelis and Palestinians. Sooner or later,
the killing has to stop. Whether it's
now or 200 years from now, people of
good will will have to take over."
J. Leonard Hyman, whose law career
spans almost five decades, ended his
speech with a candle-lighting ceremony.
. "We're groping in the darkness,
probing to find a solution," he said.
"This symbolic light will lead us to a
fuller understanding of each other —
to real community and real justice." 0
