dents Jody Rogow and
Lisa Rosenberg each
watched their fathers
suffer from and eventually succumb
to a disease they didn't know much
about.'
But instead of silently dealing with
their pain, the two women came
together to create an event that not
only raises funds, but also raises aware-
ness about Amyotrophic Lateral
Sclerosis.
ALS — Lou Gehrig's Disease — is a
progressive and fatal neurological dis-
ease that affects 30,000 people in the
United States. There are 1,200 cases in
Michigan.
Jody Rogow didn't know these facts
in 1997, when her normally athletic,
energetic father, Jerry Klask, com-
plained of speech problems. After visit-
ing several doctors, including one at
the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, Klask
went to see Dr. Eva Feldman at the
University of Michigan. Dr. Feldman is
the director of the ALS Clinic and ALS

research at the university.
A few tests to eliminate other neuro-
logical disorders confirmed her suspi-
cions about Klask's illness.
ALS is not as well known and wide-
spread as some diseases. There are no
gender or socio-economic boundaries.
It usually attacks people who are
between the ages of 40-60, although
cases have been diagnosed in individu-
als in their 20s and 30s.
"Other than [baseball Hall of Famed
Lou Gehrig, it's tough to put a face
behind this disease," says Rogow.
"People just don't live long enough to
become a spokesperson. Those that
want to have in many cases lost the use
of their voice to speak. It's really diffi-
cult to advocate while you have the dis-
ease."
