Let's Remember
America's Friends

Ask yourself these questions: Were
the 19 terrorists who hijacked four
commercial airliners on Sept.-11
Israelis or Arabs?
Who danced with delight in the
streets upon learning that America
was attacked, Israelis or Arabs? Who
straps explosives on their children
and sends them off to kill innocent
civilians, Israelis or Arabs?
Which governments promote dem-
ocratic values and ideologies, includ-
ing free speech, free press and free
elections, Israel or its Arab neigh-
bors? Which governments endorse
terrorist regimes such as Iraq and
Syria — Israel or its Arab neighbors?
Which governments regularly sup-
port and encourage anti-American
rallies, Israel or its Arab neighbors?
While the future of the Middle
East is uncertain ("Little Support,"
May 3, page 18), what remains emi-
nently clear is the distinction
between America's friends and foes.

Lodge Story
Well Done

We want to thank you for the article
on Einstein Lodge of B'nai B'rith
("The Next Generation," April 5,
-page 39).
We were very pleased with the
article, by Esther Tschirhart. It was
well written and it captured the
essence of our group and what we
are trying to do. We will carry on in
our efforts to continue this organiza-
tion of Holocaust survivors by
bringing in the next generation as
members.
We have received muchpositive
feedback and we hope the article will
help our efforts on behalf of Albert
Einstein Lodge.

Life: It's No
End In Itself

Greg Thrasher's letter ("It's Only A
Matter Of Life," April 26, page 6)
says choosing "between good or evil"
is "insanity." What other choice do we
have? Between popcorn and pretzels?

He also says "the only side that
matters is life." What about the side
of justice, goodness, decency, morali-
ty, kindness and all other noble val-
ues? Are long lives more valuable than
good lives? What kind of life would
we have today if some of the older
generation had not given their lives
for higher values?
Life is not an end in itself. It is a
means to goodness, sanctity and an
ongoing relationship with our
Creator. The belief that life is an end
in itself is a modern form of idolatry.

No Nachas
From Skaters

Why is it that the article on figure
skaters ("Jewish On Ice?" April 26,
page 67) gave me no nachas (joy)?
Yes, the three winners of the Winter
Olympics in Salt Lake City seemed
somewhat Jewish.
Yes, Sarah Hughes, the gold-medal
winner, has a Jewish mother and a
gentile father, but her favorite holi-
day is Christmas and the family does
not practice religion, but leans
toward Judaism.
Yes, Irina Slutskaya, the silver-
medal winner, traces her Jewish her-
itage to her father's side of the fami-
ly and sometimes wears a Jewish star,
but she was married in a Catholic
chapel and crosses herself after each
Olympic routine.
Yes, [bronze medalist] Sasha
Cohen, the little spitfire and my
own favorite, may be vaguely includ-
ed in a Reform California congrega-
tion, but she never had a bat mitz-
vah even though I wished that she
had had one.
These individual choices may be
well and good for those of us who
congratulate ourselves on our great
liberalism and the marvelous accept-
ance and assimilation of Jews that.
has occurred around the world. But
those of us more parochial in our
approach, immensely proud of our
heritage and extremely concerned
over our religious survival, it is,
instead, a stech in hartz (stab in the
heart). To some of us, it is a tragedy
and a sure sign we are doing some-
thing terribly wrong.
