Shaarey Zedek Praises Berrys

Congregation Shaarey Zedek will pay
tribute to Harold and Barbara Berry,
Jewish Theological Seminary of America
honorees, at Shabbat services Saturday,
May 11.
Not only did Harold Berry follow his
father, the late Louis Berry, serving as
Shaarey Zedek president from 1975-
1977, but the Berrys' son Lawrence
Berry just completed his own term as
president.
Harold Berry's diversified business
career has included the ownership and
management of hotels, office buildings
and radio and television stations. He is a
former president of the Hannan
Memorial Foundation and past trustee
of the Independent One Mutual Funds.
He is also a past chairman of the Clover
Hill Park Cemetery Committee.
The American Friends of Hebrew
University awarded the Berrys the
Scopus Award in 1993. Both have been
leaders with the Jewish Federation of
Metropolitan Detroit and the JTS
Detroit board.
Barbara Berry is a past president of
the Sherwood Forest Chapter of
Hadassah. She is a member of the Sinai
Hospital Guild and worked for Oakland
Community Services.
Shaarey Zedek has members Daniel
Barak, Benjamin Gene, Faya Gene, Yoni
Lerner, Daniel Najman and Edward
Portnoy among the many students from
Detroit studying at JTS.
The Detroit JTS board is chaired by
Shaarey Zedek member Marty Gene. It
includes the following Shaarey Zedek

the Shin Award for dedication to syna-
gogue life at the annual community gala
Thursday, May 30, along with other
synagogue's honorees.
At the gala, Dr. Raymond Scheindlin
will speak on "A Jewish View of Islam
— Post-Sept. 11." Scheindlin, a profes-
sor of medieval Hebrew literature at
JTS, was a detective with the New York
Attorney General's Task Force on
Terrorism after Sept. 11.
The Nadises have been members of
Beth Ahm and the former Beth Moses
for 47 years. They have worked together
or separately on the board of trustees,
the religious school board and the cul-
tural committee, which Dr. Nadis
chaired. They helped organize Beth
Ahm's chavurah committee; Dr. Nadis
was co-chair for eight years.
For 15 years, Dr. Nadis has partici-
pated in the Beth Ahm High Holiday
choirs. He is a past president of the
men's club and the founder and organiz-
er of Beth Ahm's adult education
