Cantor Harold Orbach of Temple
Israel is this year's recipient of the
Benard L. Maas Foundation Prize for
Achievement in Jewish Culture and
Continuity in the field of performing
arts, presented by
the Jewish
Federation and
United Jewish
Foundation of
Metropolitan
Detroit.
For 40 years, he
Cantor Orbach
has served as the
cantor of Temple
Israel.
The prize focuses the spotlight on
one of the most important Jewish
contributions to the world: the gift of
creativity. Established in 1997 by a
gift to the Jewish Federation of
Metropolitan Detroit by the Benard
L. Maas Foundation. Outside his con-
gregational life, Cantor Orbach
received the Israel Medal of Culture
from Golda Meir when he participat-
ed in three symphony concerts for
Israel's 25th anniversary. He returned
to sing for Israel's 50th anniversary
and for the city of Jerusalem's 3000th
birthday.

Israel Volunteers
Receive Overview

The New York-based Volunteers
for Israel program will be the sub-
ject of an informational and
recruitment program 7:30 p.m.
Monday, May 13, at
Congregation B'nai Moshe.
Participants Ruth Vosko and Dr.
Max Garber, both members of
B'nai Moshe, will show an informa-
tional video and describe their expe-
riences with the program. B'nai
Moshe Sisterhood is sponsoring the
free program.
Through Volunteers for Israel,
American volunteers have the
opportunity to work in Israel for
three weeks at a time, assisting
the Jewish state in a variety of
activities.
