For Golf Outing

West Bloomfield's Sonia Glaser, a Jewish
and Zionist activist for nearly 70 years,
was honored April 21 at the Labor
Zionist Education Fund luncheon.
As a young immigrant, Glaser was
active in Zionist youth activities. A
member of the Brennar Branch of the
Farband, the first branch to conduct all
of its business in English, she organized
many cultural programs.
Realizing the impor-
tance of developing
strong Jewish and
Zionist leaders in the
community, Glaser
became active in the
Detroit areas Chay
Commission. That
Sonia Glaser
organization is dedicated
to working with
Habonim, the Labor
Zionist youth movement. Glaser was a
member of the school board of the for-
mer Chaim Greenberg Hebrew School.
She also was a volunteer at Sinai
Hospital of Detroit, translating for
Russian immigrants from both Russian
and Yiddish.
Glaser remains active with Labor
Zionist Alliance, Detroit Chay
Commission and Na'amat. She contin-
ues to organize the weekly oneg Shabbat
speaker series at the Hechtman Jewish
Apartments, where she lives.
The Labor Zionist Alliance, locally
based in Oak Park, is affiliated with the
Labor Party in Israel.
The Labor Zionist Education Fund
allows the local Labor Zionist movement
to continue to support the Habonim
Dror youth shaliach (Israel emissary).
Scholarships help children attend Jewish
summer camp and Zionist leadership-
training programs in Israel.

Zionist Organization of
America, will address a
leadership luncheon
noon Monday, May 20,
at Congregation Shaarey
Zedek in Southfield.
He will discuss "Israel
and the Arabs: Is Peace
_ Possible?" There is a

Sponsors are sought for the Jewish
Community Center of Metropolitan
Detroit's annual Dr. Larry D. Sills
Memorial JCC Golf Classic, Monday,
June 3, at the Links at Pinewood in
Commerce Township.
Proceeds will help the JCC provide
scholarships for young children to
attend the JCC's camping and youth
sports programs.
Chairing the golf outing are Terry
Nosan and Susie Sills. The steering
committee includes Rhonda Monro,
Ken Manko, Ronald B. Rich, Arthur
Sills and Melissa Wolf-Litvin.
Cost of the day, including golf and
dinner, is $275 per person. Dinner
only is $75.
Major sponsors of the golf classic
are Bank One and Ari-El Enterprises.

Society Honors
Adele Staller

The Historical Society of Michigan will
honor Adele W. Staller with the 2002
Leonard N. Simons History Award at
the annual meeting
10:45 a.m. Sunday,
June 2, at Adat
Shalom Synagogue,
followed by a lunch-
eon.
The native
Detroiter is a past
president as well as
current co-president
of the historical socie- Adele Staller
ty. For nearly 20
years, she has been
instrumental in coordinating and lead-
ing bus tours of historic Jewish Detroit.
She serves on the board of directors
of Adat Shalom and its sisterhood, is a
past president of the former Beth
Achim Sisterhood, a member of the
former Beth Achim Board of Directors
and an officer of the Michigan Branch
of the Women's League of Conservative
Judaism.
She volunteered at Jewish Family
Service, tutoring Russian students for
their citizenship rests. She is retired
after teaching elementary school in
Detroit for 36 years.
There is a charge of $25 for the
