me how America has matured."
• When asked if he thought being
homosexual or being Jewish was a
greater detriment to his political
career, Frank responded that being
gay was the bigger barrier.
"Being both Jewish and gay freed
me from the delusion that I could
become president," he said. "I've
lived to see anti-Semitism as a polit-
ical barrier not disappear completely,
but diminish significantly."
Frank believes that homophobia
and anti-Semitism have much in
common; therefore, it is especially
important for Jews to fight against
homophobia.
"Jews and gays are 'invisible,"
Frank said. "They get a chance to
sneak up on the bigots, who may
not realize that their friend, co-
worker or customer is Jewish or
homosexual. We don't wear neon
signs: African Americans don't get
that chance."

Honesty Triumphs

Let's Get Frank was shown with the
Oscar-winning film The Times of
Harvey Milk. Milk, a San Francisco
city supervisor, who was both Jewish
and openly gay, was shot and killed,
along with Mayor George Moscone,
by disgruntled fellow Supervisor
Dan White.
Although Frank never met Milk
personally, Milk had a great influ-
ence on him.
"Harvey Milk showed me the
importance of coming out," Frank
said. "Most Americans are not

homophobic; they just think they're
supposed to be. Most people who
have come out have had better expe-
riences than they expected.
"When we're honest, we give more
and more people the opportunity to
act against their own homophobia,"
he said.
Katie Werner of West Bloomfield
agreed. Now 21, she told her family
she was gay when she was 15.
"My mom was completely cool,
and my dad is still getting used to
it," she said. "Now my grandmother
on my mother's side just wants to
make sure I date Jewish girls."
Let's Get Frank and The Times of
Harvey Milk were co-sponsored by
Michigan Jewish AIDS Coalition
(MJAC) and its Educating our
Community about Homosexuality
through Outreach (ECHO) pro-
gram.
"Our goal is to help our commu-
nity become more inclusive," said
Linda Lee, who chairs the ECHO
committee chairperson and is a past
JCC president. "Education is the
way to do that, and film is a great
medium to do it in a non-threaten-
ing way."
Pam and Mike Hazlett of
Rochester Hills have a 20-year-old
son who came out when he was 15.
"It's hard to believe my son doesn't
have the same rights that my hus-
band and I have," Pam Hazlett said.
"I'm grateful to people like Harvey
Milk and Barney Frank, and to
MJAC and the Detroit Jewish corn-
munity."
